How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Remote control via notification agent

It could be great if we allow triggering the client via the notification agent to start remote controlling,
So an admin could still start a remote control task from the console but the client will actually create the session.

    this way we could:
    1. eliminate the need for port 2701 to the clients
    2. eliminate the need for client DNS name resolving
    3. potentially, allow remote control via Cloud Management Gateway for internet clients

    • Display Security Scopes and Collections columns by default under Administrative Users

Many organizations struggle a lot with the concepts in Role Based Administration. One of the things I see that helps them immensely to see how they've misapplied security is to simply turn on the Scopes and Collections column views under Administrative Users. While the Roles are shown by default, without the Scopes and Collections, there isn't enough context for them to understand what is actually set up.

Please display the Security Scopes and Collections columns by default under the Administrative Users view in the ConfigMgr console. This will help people understand RBA at a glance much more easily.

      Thanks for…

      • CB1606 Hardware Inventory - Client Events - Show friendly names

A new class popped up in CB1606 Hardware Inventory called Client Events. It includes an Event Name (GUID) and a count. Please also include a friendly name for the events.

        • Add tab for Antimalware Policies on Collection view similar to Device view

Although AM Policies are deployed to Collections just like Custom Client Settings, there isn't a tab to show you deployed AM Policies on collection console views.

Bonus points: Look at Device view and Collection view tabs, and make the names congruent ("Custom Client Settings" vs. "Client Settings")

Super Bonus Points: Resultant Set of Antimalware Polies view which has been suggested elsewhere for a long time (https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/10237263-add-a-view-for-resultant-set-of-policy-for-anti-ma
          and
          https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8398638-policy-resultant-for-scep-policy-like-clients-sett)

Super Extra Bonus Points: Resultant Set of Client Settings and Resultant Set of Antimalware Policies should clearly show what pages were set by what policy. (https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/14855388-resultant-set-of-client-settings-should-show-what)

          • Printing of collections. Or output to Excel spreadsheet.

There are times when I'd like to print out a collection display. Alternatively we could export the display to an Excel spreadsheet and print from there.

            • Allow using a custom icon for software center

The new branding options in Software Center are fantastic. With the ability to add a logo and web content, it really does look fantastic and users seem to have been receptive.

The final touch would be the ability to customize the icon on the start menu through client settings. We could do that in a GPO, but it's clunky.

              • Ability to choose 'access content directly' and 'download content' for packages in a task sequence

Recently the Access Content Directly check box was added to the Apply Operating System step in the task sequence which allows you to override the Download Content setting on the deployment. It would be great to be able to do this with other packages and effectively mix and match as appropriate.

                  • Maintenance Window Templates

The concept of Maintenance Window Templates would allow an administrator to device pre-configured Maintenance Windows (The timeframes and recurrence schedules) which could then be chosen from when configuring Collection Maintenance Windows. In addition, these same pre-defined Maintenance Windows could be made available (via Software Center, if allowed by the admin) for end users to be able to change the individual system Maintenance Window on demand from that pre-defined list.

This is essentially an expansion on the "Business Hours" feature however it allows the admin to specify maintenance windows which may align with Business Unit or IT Maintenance Window schedules.

                    • Create a client option to clear the Application Catalog history.

We get occasional complaints from our end users that software they once installed from the Application Catalog (e.g. MS Access 2013) still keeps showing up in their Software Center as "Available" once they have either uninstalled it or have been upgraded to e.g. Office 2016.

It would be nice to have an option in the SCCM client to clear the history and make it forget about the previously requested applications from the Application Catalog.

                      • MSI feature management

It would be great if the Deployment Types had a feature to manage MSI features.

Currently I have a need for it for Microsoft LAPS.
All our machines need the CSE feature and select employees need the Management and Management.UI features.

Using the default detection method making two different applications with the same MSI, installing different features, will result in the second application to run to evaluate as installed before it runs.
Making detection methods for the different features of an MSI can be difficult work.

An ability to manage the features in an MSI via Deployment Types and Detection…

                        • Configure application deployment retry

When applications fail to deploy, you need to wait for the next application deployment reevaluation cycle before the next attempt is made to install it (unless the user manually retries via software center).

In the most part, when applications fail generally it's because of something that is going on at the endpoint at that specific time. E.g. reboot pending/a file in use etc etc. Therefore on a second retry (normally after a reboot) the application will install.

It would be good if there was a "Retry Failed Install" option where you could configure if you wanted the application to automatically…

                          • Make Progress Status messages descriptive

The Create Task Sequence Media Wizard reports very basic information during the creation, eg. Processsing 0% or 14 % etc but what is it progressing? As you cannot see this information and the processing status resets to 0% multiple times.

Would be helpful to know what it is doing!

                            • Reuseable .exe list for closing running Application

Would be nice to be able to create a default list of .exe's that can be selected for the detection of open apps feature. And/or have CM remember them and keep a running history to dynamically build those exclusions. That way, you don't have to type in the same exclusions over and over, or fat finger them or keep them in notepad to remember.

                              • Option to scheulde a mandatory reboot in maintenance window configuration

It would be great as part of configuring a maintenance window for a set of computers we could tick a box that would create a mandatory reboot at the beginning or the end of the window. So that even if there is no software or updates the computer will still get a clean reboot.

                                • Maintenance window start date regression in 1606 - year 1970

We have a 5-minute, non-recurring maintenance window starting 1/1/1970 1:00 AM configured on several critical device collections to prevent reboots due to accidentally-configured deployments - and this worked as of SCCM 1511. In 1606 though, when I try to edit that maintenance window, I receive an un-handled ArgumentOutOfRangeException (Value should be between 'MinDate' and 'MaxDate').

Creating a new maintenance window starting 1/1/1971 1:00 AM (the UI won't even allow you to set 1970, it'll just flip it back to the previous value) and deleting the older one works, but this is certainly a bug. I don't know yet if other…

It should be possible that extensions for Windows Intune can be installed without adminrights while opening the Admin Console after the Extension is activated.

                                    • Add-CMScriptDeploymentType -AddDetectionClause "OR" functionality

It would be helpful to have the ability to select OR as a Connector Value (which only has 2 states AND, OR) for the AddDetectionClause of Add-CMScriptDeploymentType
The best example of this is when trying to create a ConfigMgr Client Update application. The client has a different GUID depending on whether it is x86 or x64.

Run download computer policy automatically when a computer is added to a collection with a deployment.
