How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  1. Grant end user more flexibility to manage execution of required deployments (“postpone required deployments”)

It would be great to be able to allow user to manage even deployments where software (applications, software updates …) has to be installed as “required” (mandatory) in a more flexible way.
In many cases software should be installed as soon as possible, but needn’t be installed necessarily till a specific date. Therefore, it would be great to give the user limited control when to install the software allowing him to choose a time which is most appropriate for him.
E.g. instead of forcing a user who was on vacation for two weeks to install the software when he logs…

  2. Application Catalog - Self Service Windows 10 Upgrade via Application Catalog.

We are testing the ability to add a Win 10 upgrade to the Application Catalog with success.

We are able to successfully publish the Win 10 upgrade as a standard Package and simply run Setup.Exe. This has worked and we have successfully updated systems in our Lab from Win 7 to Win 10 with this method. The user clicks "Install" from the App Cat and they are presented with the standard Win 10 setup screens.

We want to offer this as an option to our Engineers and Application developers that want to jump on to Win 10 for testing on…

  3. Right click a package and goto the deployment report.

It would be great if we could right click a deployment in a package and it could take us to the monitoring > deployments report, instead of having to manually navigate to it by going to Monitoring > Deployments.

  5. Allow Application Detection to use SHA-1 HASH of a file.

Allow Application Detection to use SHA-1 HASH of a file to determine if its installed.

Baseline Configs can test if a file has a particular HASH, but won't let you remediate it (That would be the IDEAL scenario)

So, we deploy an app that puts the CORRECT file into the location. Using Application Detection, there is no way (other than a VBSCRIPT) to detect if the CORRECT file was moved into place so that the deployment doesn't occur over and over.

We can natively get the SHA-1 HASH (see baselines) so it shouldn't be THAT hard to integrate into application…

  6. Make Dynamically Installed Application CIs Show Up in Compliance Reports

Applications installed via task sequence using dynamic variables are never compliant because there is no associated Policy (unless you also deploy the application seperately).

This means that compliance reports are useless if you install applications dynamically as part of your task sequence.

This is a great shame because it means we have to go back to using hardware or software inventory to reliably detect installed software. In some cases, inventory has to be extended to find certain applications. And since there is no native way to associate an inventory item with an application, that data has to be stored elsewhere,…

  7. Revoke approvals in Application Catalog. Disable "optional software" for new software notifications

Allow us to revoke an approval request. If an uninstall command is provided in the deployment type, it should optionally run the uninstall command. Also possibly integrate this with software metering.

Give us the ability to disable "optional software" for new software notifications. If a user requests some software, then uninstalls it, it will show up as available optional software. The problem is that it will pop up a notification every time the user logs in. This is annoying our users especially since they uninstalled it for a reason. So either make it intelligent enough to remove the notification after…

  8. Give the users control to schedule application installation on "Application Catalog"

When a user select an application to install, there are no way to permit them to control the best schedule to an application be installed (like their lunch time).

Some users tell me that could to be much better for the productivity and practicity.

  9. Application Catalog should have the ability to detect the OS platforms.

This is to avoid user install the wrong OS platforms applications and unnecessary error pop up which give wrong impression to end user and increase support costs. It should only shown up whatever is applicable similar like software center / Run Advertised Program (RAP).

  10. Cannot setup Application Model withouth detection logic

We cannot setup a application without detection logic. We have some script/package which has to be deployed on daily basis irrelevant whether application is installed or not and it doesn't require any detection logic. Can we request Microsoft to update Application model i.e we can setup application without detection logic

  12. Allow application install only on logon/logoff screen

A great thing would be install an application on logon screen or after a User logged off.
    So every application is closed.

  13. SMART download on Software Uninstallation

Application Chains currently download EVERY application before evaluating if "uninstallation" of older version in the chain are necessary.

Instead.. only download the Final Installation source. then evaluate if older versions "need" to be uninstalled.. (by looking at the detection methods.. and the "uninstall" preferences..

If needed.. download the entire chain of software uninstallation sources.. (...the current behavior)... else.. you just install it and skip this whole download chain

  14. Combine all portals into one universal portal

There is so many different portals.

1- Company portal app for Config manager.
    2- Software Center
    3- New software center
    4- Apple catalog

Reason: it is way to complicated for users to decide which one to use

Ask: create one universal portal that does all 4 is capable of doing

  15. Add options to define "on fail" actions for package and application install

Similar to what is introduced in SP1 for patches, allow us to for example define "reboot and retry upon fail" for package and application installation.

This catches a lot of issues with installations already, as often a reboot is enough to then let the installation succeed.

  16. Application catalog - select multiple applications to be installed as a queue

It would be extremly usefull if an user can select multiple applications in the application catalog that he/she wants and then hit the Install button once.

Hereby the applications are installed in one batch (queue). This wil save the user lots of time and clicking in the application catalog when the user wants to install a couple of applications.

  18. Independend deployment type

Currently, when creating Application and Application´s deployment types, they are mandatory linked to each other.

In production, we need 2 different deployment types. 1st deployment type would be used on-field computers which require complex uninstall script and 2nd would be independend native setup.exe /silent

Currently, the issue is, that we cannot use independend deployment types in Application model.

  19. Right click Applications and Packages for open datasource

If I want to edit the source files for a package I open the properties goto Data Source Tab, copy the sourcefolder and paste it in the explorer to go the source.

If I want to edit the source files for an application I open the properties of a deployment type, goto Content location, copy and past the content for edit the source.

It would be nice to right click a package or application to open the source folder directly

  20. Application catalogue improvement

It would be very useful that we could limit in application catalog what user can view by adding collection see example in attached document below..

This could be available to all but still require administrative approval.
Or could be limited let say to a country but still require administrative approval.
