  1. Fix the Software Update Task Sequence (built-in TS patching during OSD)

How is this still a problem? Ask any MVP and they all agree: the built-in task sequence for patching during OSD doesn't work. It doesn't survive double reboots, it has a upper patch limit before it crashes ... it's basically garbage. I don't mind making golden images in MDT, but I shouldn't _have_ to ... and yet I do. I makes SCCM feel less like a singular solution.

Thanks for all your suggestions and feedback, updating status to completed.

SCCM 1902 fast Ring released today
    Blog: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Configuration-Manager-Blog/Update-1902-for-Configuration-Manager-current-branch-is-now/ba-p/376516
    Docs: https://docs.microsoft.com/sccm/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-in-version-1902

Updates added to the previous response, these documents are the first iteration and we’ll continue to add and improve.
We’d ask if you encounter issues with the Install Updates step to file a bug or engage support so we have logs etc. to work with to help diagnose and solve your issues. Also, if there’s specific asks for additions to the feature or documentation please open additional User Voice items.

Today we published a new article and related flowchart to provide some insight and guidance for using the Install Software Updates task sequence step.

    Flowchart at full size
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/osd/understand/media/ts-step-install-software-updates.svg

    - Flowcharts; the install updates proved popular. We’ve had asks for the same for Peer Cache, Task Sequence Pre-cache, Software Distribution Troubleshooting and more.…

  2. Daisy chain Task Sequences (OSD and non-OSD)

I would like to see the ability to launch one task sequence from within another task sequence. For some processes, you run the same steps across multiple deployments. Today, you have to duplicate these steps across many task sequences. The ability to execute a task sequence from a task sequence would alleviate this need and reduce errors and inconsistencies for administrators.

This features is included in #ConfigMgr 1710 release.

    General Blog: https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/?p=67486
    Docs: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-in-version-1710

The notes for the 1711 Tech Preview apply here too and we’ll continue to work on these

Console actions are fixed in many instances where we didn’t traverse the referenced packages/content
Export now exports child task sequence and referenced content – secrets are cleared from the referenced task sequences too
Task Sequence import now works and detects duplicates
Copy action copies parent and all reference to child task sequences
Delete action detects if there’s a parent child relationship and displays what’s affected
Similarly deleting packages that are in child task sequences is detected and shown in the delete package wizard
Initially we had limited to one level – now there’s no limit, but use that wisely
Related to the above, we do not permit a circular reference i.e. a parent cannot reference same parent, a parent cannot…

  3. Collapsable Task Sequence groups

Allow the groups in a Task Sequence to be collapsed allowing a better overall view.

  4. Allow us to disable, hide or edit the "Confirm that you want to install a new operating system on your computer" popup

Wouldn't it make a lot of sense to be able to disable the "Confirm that you want to install a new operating system on your computer" prompt that you see when you launch an OSD task sequence in Windows.

Right now you cannot change this behaviour, in addition you cannot even customize the text.

What I'd like to see is the following (particularly with the Windows 10 Upgrade task sequence being used within Windows.)

    * ability to DISABLE this popup via the deploy ts wizard
    * ability to EDIT the popup's text to something more 'fitting' (think about Upgrade...)

    and…

Updating to completed. 1702 is released, see here for more details https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-in-version-1702

From TAP and Tech Preview we’ve had some feedback, e.g.
    - make only the headline and first line required
    - have sample text
    - allow customizing where the task sequence appears Applications or Operating Systems regardless of properties
If there’s additional feedback or changes please send them on either via User Voice, or mail.

    Thanks

  5. Convert from Legacy BIOS to UEFI using one task sequence

    Scenario:
You have a current environment where you have deployed Windows 7 x64 OS, or similar, and you have your BIOS configured in Legacy mode.
You would like to be able to take advantage of the new Windows 10 features, such as "Credential Guard" therefore you need to enable Secure Boot and UEFI BIOS.
You would like to do this in one task sequence.

This scenario currently is not possible because SCCM knows if you are running UEFI or not - and has builtin safeguards.

    Workaround:
Currently it's possible to create 2 task sequences.
    1 Task contains the following:
    Script…

  6. Task Sequence - View Only option

Add Option to View TS, instead of "edit". Often times I just want to look at a TS for reference, and not edit it. Just safe guarding the TS from my accidental clicks.

  8. Task Sequence Error Dialog Box Needs to Show Step Name

The error dialog box for the task sequence shows the error code, but does not show you what step threw the error.
    - Show the step name on the default error dialog box.
    - The modal dialog box for errors goes directly over the progress dialog box, so you can’t see the step from there without using the mouse.
    - You may not have mouse support, especially when you are RDPing into a box with a VMware or Hyper-V console… which means this is REALLY frustrating

  9. Ability to click back when and re-try when a Task Sequence dependency is not found

At the minute have to completely restart the TS when a dependency is not found. Could we not introduce a retry option once the dependency issue is resolve. Similar to checking for installation pre-req's

  10. Add OSD Variable to not send Status Messages

Now that TS support installing applications list, it would be good to have a TS Variable such as SMSTSSendStatusMessage that would allow us to not send status messages like offline media. Or in some cases to send status messages when using Offline media.

When installing a TS that has all content cached and the machine is offline the TS tries to send status messages and when it fails it retries a number of times increasing the overall time of the TS deployment, however it will complete successfully.

  11. Set a default or preferred boot image for PXE

Have an option to set a specific boot image for PXE. In an environment where there are multiple boot images, when a device PXE boots it will first download whichever boot image (that is PXE capable) associated with the most recently deployed task sequence. It would be nice to have an easier way to just set a default or preferred boot image for PXE instead.

    Updating Status to completed

The behavior is document at the link below – How is the boot image selected for clients booting with PXE?
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/osd/deploy-use/use-pxe-to-deploy-windows-over-the-network#how-is-the-boot-image-selected-for-clients-booting-with-pxe

  12. Add support for using one USB Ethernet adapter with multiple computers

With many laptops and tablet devices not having wired Ethernet adapters built in, it is necessary to use USB Ethernet adapters to use OSD with these systems. However, Configuration Manager currently associates the MAC address of the adapter with the first computer it was used on, which causes issues re-using the adapter. Please add an option for the MAC of the USB Ethernet adapter to be automatically removed from Configuration Manager at the end of the OSD sequence. Only the built in wireless adapter should be associate with the device after OSD.

  13. Fix very slow content download (and constant certificate checks) - in a HTTPS Only infra - for OS upgrades through Task Sequence.

Basically we observe a very slow content download ("Upgrade Operating System" + "Download package content" step, for the driver packs) when doing Win10 in-place upgrade through a TS over HTTPS.
Issue occurs on both Win10 1607/1703, using SCCM 1802 (back-end and client).
Approx. 90% of the smsts.log entries are all about certificate validation (sometimes even multiple times for 1 downloaded file).
After each selection/validation action, a status of <success> is returned.. but only seconds later the same selection/validation is attempted over and over again.

  14. Run PowerShell Script item in Task Sequences should allow alternate credentials

Right now, if I need to run a PS script in a Task Sequence requires to use the Run Command Line item using PowerShell.exe. However, if I want to run a script with parameters, then I must use the -command option for PowerShell.exe, which has some odd parsing problems that can cause scripts to fail when run this way.

  15. Integrate /ResetBase and WIM Optimization/Exporting into Offline Servicing

In the interest in making my OS deployment task sequences as fast and as optimized as possible, I always optimize WIM files anytime they're updated or re-created.

In my build/capture task sequence, I add a step at the very end before capture to run DISM /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase so that all of the superseded updates are removed from the base image before it is captured. This results in a smaller WIM file and obviously, faster deployment times.

With the built-in Offline Servicing option for OS images, once new updates are added, they remain in the component store of the image when…

  16. Add support for tftp windowsize

I think it would be great if SCCM could have a configurable value in registry for TFTP windowsize just as it has with TFTP blocksize. Both WDS and bootmgr.exe seem to handle it but there is no easy way to get this option into the generated BCD file upon PXE boot. Seems like a low hanging fruit.

  17. Stop CMTrace from asking us if we want to use it as the default viewer for log files in WinPE

Please add the following registry keys to WinPE whenever a Boot Image is created/updated to prevent it from asking every time if we want to use CMTrace as the default viewer for log files:

    Reg add HKU\Software\Classes\.lo_ /ve /d Log.File /f

    Reg add HKU\Software\Classes\.log /ve /d Log.File /f

    Reg add HKU\Software\Classes\Log.File\shell\open\command /ve /d "\"x:\sms\bin\i386\CMTrace.exe\" \"%%1\"" /f

    Updating status to completed

This is available in our 1802 release, details below

    General Blog: https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/?p=69422

    Docs: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-in-version-1802

One question I’ve been asked a few times is ‘can I take the copy of CMTrace from the Tech Preview build and use it with my version of SCCM?’ – answer is Yes.

  18. Hardware inventory sould include Secure Boot state by default

In ConfigMgr TP 1701 the Hardware Inventory now collects UEFI information. To complete the story the Secure Boot should also be included by default.

  19. OSD Task Sequence (1703) Not Displaying

When running a task sequence to deploy a 1703 based image, the second part of the task sequence: "Setup Operating System" does not display.

The screen saying "Just a moment..." is displayed instead of the SCCM task sequence screen, meaning you cannot see the progress.

If the machine is left, it does actually complete the steps, but it would be nice to see the SCCM screen once again!

Thanks for all your suggestions and feedback, updating status to completed since this appeared limited to earlier Windows releases.
Testing with 1803 (Redstone 4) and 1809 (Redstone 5) have been fine also with Task Sequence Progress UI shown. The ‘Just a moment..’ is not something under task sequence control, installing manually shows the same behavior.
If you do see issues please file a bug or another UV item and we’ll investigate.

Also, SCCM 1902 fast Ring released today

  20. Secret task sequence variable value Exposed

We have the need to run a command line in the task sequence and leverage a secret value TS variable ADMACCTPW set with the local admin account password. Example Run Command Line "net user admin %ADMACCTPW%
The issue is in the SMSTS.log the variables are all expanded like the ProgramName = 'net user admin mynewadminpassword' InstallSoftware 7/1/2016 12:58:58 PM 4468 (0x1174)

Thereby exposing the secret value TS variable

    Thanks for the additional comments.

There was a bug where if the task sequence steps were reordered then the variable was replaced by a GUID, this was fixed 8 September. Any Technical Preview from 1809 onwards would have the fix – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/get-started/technical-preview
