  1. Information dialog for "Check Readiness"

When "Check Readiness" fail because of requirements then the result is a error dialog without any information why it fails.
So yes we can go into logs and tell why it fails but for the users that started for example Windows 10 upgrade the error message is not clear.

It would be good if it can say why it failed.
    Example:
Not enough disk space. Require drive with XXXXMB

  2. Show Task Sequence Properties as its own window on the taskbar

Many times I'm wanting to compare Task Sequences, but as I open them they fall behind other open windows (such as MDT itself). I end up having to minimize or move windows around until I can find both properties windows. The same occurs if I'm looking at a task sequence and then click into a VM, or any other time I'm working at multiple things at once.

  4. Update all instances of package in a task sequence

We have multiple packages that are used by multiple steps during a task sequence (scripts packages and custom software packages that take multiple steps to install). Since said package might be referenced by a half dozen or dozen steps, when a package revision is made, all references must be updates... which is easy to miss some. It would be great to update the first step referencing the package, then click a button to 'Update all References' and every other step that references the old package gets updated to the new package.

The whole purpose here is we don't update existingā€¦

    Thanks for the feedback.

We’ve started work on this item – https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8339997-daisy-chain-task-sequences-osd-and-non-osd – this will allow ‘modular’ task sequence

I think this will solve your ask too. In your case you would update one task sequence – that task sequence would be referenced by others. One it’s updated with the new scripts package for example, then all task sequence that call that one will have the updated scripts.

    Does that address your scenario?

  5. SCCM Task Sequence Lock

Enable the ability to Lock a Task Sequence once it has been released, similar to the effect when a TS is locked out to a user when editing it. In a large environment with multiple SCCM admins using OSD is you be a nice feature to prevent accidental editing of production Task Sequences.

  6. Windows 7 vNext

Windows 7 is in extended support until 2020.
If extended support ends, it is likely removed from SCCMs supported OSes.
In certain cases you have to keep Windows 7 "alive", e.g. factory, where the cost of the machine that the PC is controlling is far higher, then in an office environment.
To keep this systems alive we canĀ“t deploy a cloud solution.
Deploying the cloud will have the risk we canĀ“t control the Windows 7 machines anymore and canĀ“t setup a new machine anymore, in case the old one needs to be replaced or reimaged.
    So keeping at least aā€¦

  7. Allow multiple lines in Run Command Line for Task Sequences

Currently we can only add one command line per task. Can that be changed to add support for multiple command lines and only return the error code on the resulting script? This would allow for much faster development and trouble-shooting in task sequences.

  8. Move task sequence parsing into a separate log

When searching for logging about a particular step in smsts.log, you often have to skip over multiple parsing entries from reboots. Moving the logging about parsing into a different log (smstsinit.log?) would make troubleshooting a bit easier.

    Thanks for the feedback

We have a couple of open work items to improve task sequence logging and I’ll add this to the list of potential improvements to consider

  9. Allow Limiting the number of characters in a Collection Variable

We use collection variables when imaging a new machine, Specifically the OSDComputerName variable is used for naming the machines. Sometimes machines get named incorrectly and have too many characters. If I was able to limit the amount of characters that could be used in a Collection Variable, I could set OSDComputerName to be only 15 characters and our task sequences would not fail because the name is too long.

I would also appreciate if we could exclude special characters from being typed. Thanks!

  11. Allow Install application and install swupdates steps to run offline

The 2 steps in OSD that cause the majority of issues are Install software updates, and Install application, the latter could have been predicted by the experiences of install software updates in CM07.

I am convinced that the reason these two are responsible for so many hickups are largely related by their requirement to have management point interaction when calling these steps. All other steps in a tasksequence have collected, or can collect al their info upfront. The install application and swupdate steps are exceptions to this. If they could collect all their necessary details upfront, that would make forā€¦

  12. Windows 10 ADK Timeline parity with SCCM Build Releases to Support 30 Month Fall Release Support Cycle

It would appear at a high level that adjustments were not made to coordinate support timelines across the architecture of components for SCCM, Example, while extending Windows 10 1709 Ent. support to 30 months, I would expect the ADK to be supported with the Configuration Manager release 1810, (1903, 1909, etc.) to maintain parity with bug fixes.

    Thanks for your feedback.

For ADK support we always support N-1 i.e. current and previous version. This is the matrix we use for testing each release and forms this statement – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/configmgr/core/plan-design/configs/support-for-windows-10#windows-10-adk

Each ADK can be used to deploy current and earlier versions of Windows 10. Between releases (either SCCM or ADK) there’s no fundamental change with how we interface.

Can you elaborate some more on what your request is here, please?

    Thanks and regards

  13. OSD during WinPE and the need of disk for storage

Since bitlocker, UEFI with GPT and mSATA came in the picture to mention some disk-related stuff, I have struggle with OSD issues where the TS fails due to the lack of a non encrypted, partitioned regular disk to store content during the initial steps of a TS in WinPE
Here is an example, I get an OEM-installed laptop with SecureBoot and UEFI activated. To be able to install Windows 7 on this laptop I have to reconfigure the BIOS and disable SecureBoot and UEFI, fair enough. But to get the OSD TS to work I have to manually clean theā€¦

The Task Sequence can be set to use ‘Run from Net’ – OS Image, Client Package etc. have to be set to use Package Share – part of the properties, visible on the ‘Data Access’ tab. Would that option help?

  14. DCR : Change "Pre-download content for Task Sequence" description in GUI

This is a DCR request to update the Desploy TS wizard. The option to "Pre-Download content for this task sequence" is by itself misleading. Technicians attempting to deploy a TS, select the option "Pre-Download content for this task sequence" believing all content will be downloaded. Leveraging this option with a Software TS or without an upgrade package, often results in unexpected errors.

By design this features currently only applies to the OS upgrade package and related drivers. The only place this is mentioned in the CONFIGMGR console is when the feature is enabled.

Updating status to Noted. Thanks for the feedback.

The Pre-download content for this task sequence applies to all statically referenced packages OS Images, SWD, Driver Packages, OS Upgrade Packages. If pre-download is set and the task sequence references 1 OS Image, 20 Driver Packages then all 21 will pre-download to cache. Only the OS Upgrade package uses the pre-download logic – match for Language and Architecture.

We’ll likely add a ‘Learn more’ FWDLink to something like https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/osd/deploy-use/create-a-task-sequence-to-upgrade-an-operating-system rather than change the string. As we add more objects to use Pre-download conditions then we can keep the link updated.

  15. Link groups or steps together in Task Sequence

Would be nice to have the ability to link identical groups or steps together, so that when you change one, all the linked ones also change.

This could be useful if you for example have a lot of repeating tasks in different parts of the task sequence, for example adjustments after reboots, or with different groups for software installations (where the steps are the same).

Groups\steps would probably need a "Link ID" and a visual change to reflect that the group\step is a linked group\step in the Task Sequence Editor.

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. What you’re suggesting is covered with this item – https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8339997-daisy-chain-task-sequences-osd-and-non-osd

The idea being steps that are common would be seen as modular – so with the modular steps in a ‘parent’ task sequence(s) an update to the modular would then update in all.

Please have a read of the link and let me know if that will address your ask. If so then I’ll merge the votes.

You’ll also see a comment that the Nested Task Sequence has disappeared from Tech Preview – that will be rectified shortly.

  16. Enable "Servicing Screen", similar to W7 Thin PC for large upgrades to prevent PC use...

Enable a "Service Screen" (similar to W7 Thin PC) for Software Updates, OSD, large-chained deployments to prevent PC use. Make it optional for the Admin to select to use it and basically reboot into "maintenance mode", run all tasks/Adverts and re-enable the standard UI again on the last reboot of the sequence. Enable the OS to get around this mode in safe boot, if necessary...

  17. MDT features in ConfigMgr

    Per Adam Meltzer's request:

Instead of having MDT installed by default with CM, have the option to include some of MDT's features into CM.

"Maybe a better request here would be to have some more feature parity between MDT and Configuration Manager. In other words, at minimum Configuration Manager should have all of the functionality MDT has."

Hi. Prior to 1610 we ‘sysprepped’ the Client removing Certs, TRK etc. In 1610 we have changed to remove the client completely – see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-in-version-1610 for What’s New in 1610

See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/osd/understand/task-sequence-steps#BKMK_PrepareConfigMgrClientforCapture for detail on the changes in the task sequence Prepare ConfigMgr Client for Capture step

Where you have issues with the client not being fully removed in SCCM 2012. If so can you elaborate on what they were and also let us know if the changes for removing the client address your issues.

  20. Variable with Full OU path

Take the OU path from 'Network Settings" and turn it into a variable e.g. _SMSMachineOUpath
I use dynamic variables to determine the OU based on location and device so my Domain OU path has OU=%devicetype%,OU=Location,OU=workstations,DC=Contoso,DC.com
so it would be nice to have the actual value in a variable that I can reference later say in a script to move existing object to the above created OU. I can see the full path in the SMSTS.log, but not in a variable. Also removing the LDAP:\ from the start could be handy in some situations I guess.

    Hi Marty,

Vlad ask to pass this on:

He can try at the beginning of TS to add steps to set variables that I listed in my reply to the same strings that he entered in the UI of Network Settings step? Which will result in Network Settings step take the values from these global variables (not from UI, even though they may be the same). But it will also have a side effect that these variables will be available during task sequence for whatever he wants to user them for.

I’ll have a bit of time at the weekend. I’ve a couple of ideas about removing the LDPA:\\ you mentioned. Can you describe the scenario you want to address, please?

    Thanks
