  1. Ability to disable/control the check for references at startup of a task sequence

A task sequence checks its referenced packages at startup and fails if not all packages are available. With an international hierarchy and some (very big) appplication packages that only need to be deployed in certain countries we don't have (don't want to) put all packages onto all distribution points whether they are required or not. We use the same task sequence for all countries with dynamic variables and some conditions. By condition it is decided which application will be installed at a certain location. The workaround we implemented today is to have one centralized DP with all packages so computersā€¦

  2. Show different icon for Task Sequence steps with active condition or continue on error in TS Editor

The Task Sequence editor shows a green icon for every active step and a grey icon for every disabled step. It world be great if you could see on the icon if an active step has an execution condition (maybe a blue icon) or is set to continue on error.

At the moment you have to click on every step and switch to the options tab to get this information.

Agreed – I’d filed the same item in our database a while back. Updating status to Noted – see https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/configmgreng/2016/03/11/configmrguv/

Pannu – I’ll circulate that feedback for Run Task Sequence

Chad – Collapsible Groups were added in our 1703 Tech Preview – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/get-started/capabilities-in-technical-preview-1703

    Thanks all!

  3. Implement service/feature in OSD that picks up first free Computername from AD and sets it as Computername for New-Deployment OSD.

Now I need to make manual scripts and additional web services for OSD to automatically pick up first free computer name from AD and set it for New deployment, it would be nice if SCCM could do it using inbuilt feature.

  4. Multicast on a selective basis

I have task sequences for on-demand imaging of one machine via PXE and also for automatically imaging an entire lab of computers. Ideally, the automatic TS would acquire the image via multicast from the site DP but one-off OSD runs on a single machine would still use unicast. It would be very nice to see this option available without having to load the image twice on the DP and enable one for multicast.

One potential option here is to use the Multicast properties to require a minimum session size before starting e.g. 2. If that size is not met then the download will fallback to Unicast/HTTP. These settings are present in the ‘Enabled Scheduled Multicast’ UI. The session size option would also require a wait of minimum 1 minute

  5. UDI Wizard Applications, dynamically

Would be nice to have UDI work more like MDT. Currently, when applications are updated we need to go in and manually update all of the applications that were changed and then redeploy the toolkit files.

It's a lot more convenient in MDT. You just mark the application to show up in OSD and it pulls it in dynamically. Or build something like this into SCCM so we don't need to use UDI to allow the techs to choose what applications to install.

In MDT we were able to easily change the computer naming wizard to add options like aā€¦

  6. Introduce TS step to rearm Office

As we have TS step to sysprep Windows and ConfigMgr, it would be also highly usable to have a step for rearming Office installation after deploying the image.

Now it's usually done by "Run command line step".

  7. OSD Win PE error codes

instead of having error codes when deploying OS deployment Task Sequences that the end user or administrator has to struggle to find out what the code means only for it to be the hard disk is too small. Could the error codes if already known be displayed with meaning full reasons rather than error 0x8004352

Thanks for the feedback. This is the same as ‘More meaningful TS error messages in UI (no more 0×80004005!)’. I’ll look to see if they can be merged.

  8. SCCM Console UI: Merge task sequence properties into Edit

It would make sense to merge task sequence properties into Edit.
Also you can't view both at once right now

  9. OSD - MDT like single instance drivers

SCCM started in the right direction with driver categories. This implementation has limited uses however.

I would like to see a driver management setup more like what is available in MDT. Specifically on deployment media.

  10. Keep previous version(s) of packages

Everyone has had the issue where a package isn't available during OSD. If we had a setting that enabled us to keep a copy of the previous versions this could eliminate that issue. I think it should be a setting with the number of previous versions that you want by default. And if there are scenarios where a package is updated frequently you should be able to override the setting on that package.

  11. DCR: Restart Computer to PXE or Boot Media

Provide an option to restart computer back to PXE to allow Bios configuration changes (or simple Bios Updates) like switching from Bios to UEFI or to configure RAID Controllers inside Windows PE and Restart again to PXE to get access to the new disk configuration.

How this can be done easily:
Have a required deployment on the collection where device is member of.
Ensure Network Boot is first boot device.
As the system has already started from Network the "Clear Required PXE Deployments" must occur for this device
    Initiate WPEUTIL REBOOT

  12. Ability to stagger the start of each task sequence by wim download percentage.

To reduce network load and decrease deployment time the ability to kick a huge batch of them off all at the same time and walk away while they automatically stagger the download of the wim one system at a time based on the last systems wim download percentage.

  13. Boot Image Azure Powershell

Include option to inject Azure Powershell Cmdlets (including Azure Automation) into Boot Images. As many organizations are moving to the cloud, including the ability to login and run tasks in Azure is a must.

Thanks for your feedback. Updating status to noted.

This item is very similar to "Add “AD Powershell Module” as Optional Component for boot images"

We had to decline that as we cannot ship or take a dependency on the AD module. Similarly we won’t be able to take a dependency on Azure PSH module – we can only add what’s in the ADK.

Your ask covers a bit more ground with the ability to run tasks in Azure so I’ll leave as noted for now.

  14. WMI Query Builder for Task Sequence Options

In the Task Sequence/Options window, I can add a condition for a particular step by adding an "if" criterion that matches a WMI query, similar to building a device collection. This way, particular steps in a task sequence would only execute if a device happened to be in the selected AD OU or another, for example.

But in the WMI Query builter for device collections includes a click-here type of builder, whereas the query window in the task sequence just has a blank text box.

While I could either write the query by hand (and hope it's correct) to seeā€¦

  15. Show Task Sequence Properties as its own window on the taskbar

Many times I'm wanting to compare Task Sequences, but as I open them they fall behind other open windows (such as MDT itself). I end up having to minimize or move windows around until I can find both properties windows. The same occurs if I'm looking at a task sequence and then click into a VM, or any other time I'm working at multiple things at once.

  17. Update all instances of package in a task sequence

We have multiple packages that are used by multiple steps during a task sequence (scripts packages and custom software packages that take multiple steps to install). Since said package might be referenced by a half dozen or dozen steps, when a package revision is made, all references must be updates... which is easy to miss some. It would be great to update the first step referencing the package, then click a button to 'Update all References' and every other step that references the old package gets updated to the new package.

The whole purpose here is we don't update existingā€¦

    Thanks for the feedback.

We’ve started work on this item – https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8339997-daisy-chain-task-sequences-osd-and-non-osd – this will allow ‘modular’ task sequence

I think this will solve your ask too. In your case you would update one task sequence – that task sequence would be referenced by others. One it’s updated with the new scripts package for example, then all task sequence that call that one will have the updated scripts.

    Does that address your scenario?

  18. Provide GUI option in disk partitioning Task Sequence step to guarantee drive letter selection

We were trying to build a Windows 10 deployment and got stuck for a little while. We used the 1511 WIM from VLSC and had the OSPreserveDriveLetter = True variable. We did NOT do a build and Capture to create the customized WIM. We used the Stocked 1511 WIM to try and lay down the Windows 10 Image.

After lots of reading, troubleshooting, and frustrations, we were finally able to get the TS to use the C drive to lay down the OSDisk.

It would be awesome if we could have a task sequence step that allows the OSD adminā€¦

In 1606 we have deprecated OSDPreserveDriveLetter – instead of using the captured driver letter the change leaves Windows Setup to determine the best drive letter.

  19. SCCM Task Sequence Lock

Enable the ability to Lock a Task Sequence once it has been released, similar to the effect when a TS is locked out to a user when editing it. In a large environment with multiple SCCM admins using OSD is you be a nice feature to prevent accidental editing of production Task Sequences.

  20. Windows 7 vNext

Windows 7 is in extended support until 2020.
If extended support ends, it is likely removed from SCCMs supported OSes.
In certain cases you have to keep Windows 7 "alive", e.g. factory, where the cost of the machine that the PC is controlling is far higher, then in an office environment.
To keep this systems alive we canĀ“t deploy a cloud solution.
Deploying the cloud will have the risk we canĀ“t control the Windows 7 machines anymore and canĀ“t setup a new machine anymore, in case the old one needs to be replaced or reimaged.
    So keeping at least aā€¦
