Wake on LAN server role
Today there is a possibility to enable Wake on LAN proxy role. But this is for clients and also require that there is at least 3 devices that can have this role. And there are issues with support for 802.1x networks.
Many of our locations are small, and we may not guarantee that we have any devices running. But each location have a dedicated server that run the distribution point role. So why not be able to add a dedicated WOL proxy role on servers instead of the clients?
This way we could also limit and control the ports that need to be open to specific devices.
This is fixed in 1810. Just install clients on the servers; and bgb will be used to those servers to wake up machines.
But will not this require that at least 3 devices have the role? My point with having this added as a server component rather than a client feature is that: a) if it require at least 3 clients, then how will this work if the site is small and most of the computers are off. And b) we don't use the SCCM client on servers. Only on client devices. So the servers run the distribution point role, but they do not have the client installed and we do not manage the servers. This is due to the excessive large cost for the management client per server
