How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Viewing status of Deployments erases search results

When searching for deployments, say "May 2015", to see all of the Patch Deployments that you have recently deployed, once you double click/view status on a single one, you have to re-search for the "May 2015" deployments again. Suggest to use the Search Bar similar to the way that Explorer uses the Bread Crumbs on a search folder, so once you go back to the Deployments Tab, your original search criteria is there.

  2. Deployment Status - Add Date Time Status Information

Deployment Status messages do not include the Date/Time that the status message are processed.

We need to have the Date/Time status on these messages, so that we can determine month to month what are the successful installations we are getting on our Application Cat.

One of the main drivers of our App Cat. is to reduce then # of tickets users put in to request software installations. By leveraging the App Cat. we are letting users Self Service many applications on their own.

When we add a new application to the Self Service catalog we need to track the time…

  3. run not only applications on a tasksequence, seperate deploymenttypes would be better

Not only applications or packages/programs run in a TS would be nice to select a special deploymenttype to run. In packages with programs is it possible why not with applications and his deploymenttype.

  4. Control Windows 10 driver auto-update

With Windows 10, the system's drivers are updated directly from Windows Update. This is usually a good thing because it means the system will have the latest WHQL drivers installed. It also means the system administrator needs to maintain less driver packs for individual models (at least for corporate / enterprise computer models).

However, it sometimes happen that an updated driver will have a MSI co-installer that will run outside the scope of the SCCM client and might run concurrently with an application or package installation step from a task sequence. It will cause the installation to fail and maybe…

  5. Application Catalog Requirements

It would be extremely useful for the application catalog to display the reason why the application cannot be installed in terms of requirements. The generic requirement failure message is confusing to users and overall is not meaningful. If the hard drive doesn't have enough space it should say there is not enough space. Not having a meaningful failure message generates extra help-desk tickets.

  6. Foreground color for Softwarecenter

When choosing white colour schema you have white letters with white foreground. Would be great if we can choose the foreground colour or if the letters keep black even when you mark Items on white colour schema.

  7. Delete multiple objects from console

It would be very great and intuitive to be able to delete multiple apps \ deployment types\ deployments \ packages \ driver packages and even folders from Console without creating custom PowerShell scripts.
Today when selecting multiple objects the delete option becomes greyed out.

  8. OSD Task Sequence option to ignore "unexpected reboots"

If you are doing BIOS updates as part of a Task Sequence you are sometimes faced with "unexpected reboots" because the BIOS update program restarts the computer if you want or not (e.g. Lenovo ThinkStation BIOS updates).
Those reboots will cause the Task Sequence to fail.
It would be very helpful for those scenarios to be able to prepare a task for such reboot events and to ignore the errors in order to continue the Task Sequence after the reboot.
Maybe a modified "Restart Computer" task which prepares a Task Sequence reboot but doesn't execute it could be an approach.

  9. Add "uninstall application" as an dependency option when creating applications

An example could be when users want to install 'Office 365 x64' on a machine which has 'Office 365 x86' installed. For the 1. to be installed the other should be uninstalled.

  10. Make Windows 10 Setup Compatibility Scan Language Neutral

It would be nice if a checkbox "Perform Windows Setup Compatibility scan withnout starting upgrade" inside "Upgrade Operating System" step in SCCM Upgrade Task Sequence would be language neutral.

What I mean by this is that we would like to run this scan prior to the Upgrade itself but to be able to do that currently we have to switch the running OS to en-US (the same language as the Upgrade iso), then run the scan and in case an error is found, we need to switch back to original language again and reboot the computer. This is not a…

  11. SQL Server 2016, Reporting services

    Hi,

SQL Server 2016 and Reporting Services is shaping up to be a gigantic upgrade! The new Reporting services actually looks like a tool from this century! And Power BI is just amazing.

Is there any roadmap or info of when will SCCM will support SQL Server 2016 or just Reporting Services 2016?

  12. Add support for Status MIF reporting with Application Model

Packages/Programs in ConfigMgr support use of Status MIF reporting while the Application Model does not. Status MIFs can provide for more accurate and detailed status reporting, particularly for deployment execution failures. For this reason, some customers have been reluctant to transition to the Application Model.

The Application Model relies on exit codes for determine success/failure of deployments.
Disadvantages of depending on exit codes:

Success exit codes (0, 3010, etc.) do not always indicate successful installation; failure exit codes do not always indicate failure

Exit code 0 does not always indicate that the installation succeeded, but rather only that the installer…

  13. Automatically add products to WSUS syncs based on SCCM inventory

Currently, you need to 'know what you have' to enable update syncs for products in WSUS/SCCM. That means that components could be present and not updated, but systems appear to be '100% up-to-date'. It would be nice to have an option to allow SCCM to add software categories to look for based on inventory results (e.g. 'someone installed SQL Server 2014, so WSUS should now look for updates for it').

  14. Allow obscuring of all or portions of the SCCM installation command-line

I would like to see an option added to SCCM to allow obscuring portions of the installation command-line. This functionality would be particular useful for application installations like Microsoft SQL Server Express which accept an argument to the setup.exe specifying a clear text password.

The benefit of obscuring the password would be that the SCCM logs (i.e. appenforce.log) would not have a clear text version of the password which could be opened and read by any user having access to the c:\windows\ccm\logs folder.

  15. Possibility to priorize an (InPlace) Upgrade Task Sequence over Update Installation

Since Microsoft introduced the strategy to deliver two new OS builds per year for Windows 10 and a mandatory expiry date of SAC builds, the focus / Engineering task focuses back to perform in place Upgrades via Task Sequences.

As those Task Sequences are not deployed at a specific time during the week it might happen that some Windows OS Quality or Office Update are pending or queued for Installation. It does not make sense to deploy a Quality Update for the OS Build which is queued to be upgraded to a new OS Build (with new Quality Updates).

    My…

  16. Add support for MSU files in Application Catalog

From time to time msu quick engineering hotfixes need to be deployed to machines. It would be helpful if you could import the msu files just like an MSI then deploy using the application catalog. Another option would be to add support to software upgrades.

  18. Add preflight checks and improve documentation for the “Modify SQL Server configuration” option

1.) When running the SCCM Setup Wizard and choosing “Modify SQL Server configuration” there does not appear to be an adequate preflight check to ensure Config Manager is running with full administrative rights to A) operating systems, B) SQL instances and C) Config Manager itself. These permissions are (obviously) critical to a SQL configuration change. In enterprise environments, setup.exe should be reaching out to check rights to all the things it needs to modify (file system, registry, certificates, etc.) before it executes the changes. Partial modification of the configuration has catastrophic results.

2.) Execution of the SQL configuration change does…

  19. Applocker Management

Fully integrate AppLocker into SCCM similar to how you do for SCEP. Would be great to be able to create AppLocker rules and monitor what get allowed and disallowed.
