How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  2. Add Battery, Power state check to Task Sequence "Check Readiness"

Add Battery, Power state check to Task Sequence "Check Readiness"

Would be nice to add an extra option there to check the power state, this is very important for when making a task sequence available to the user.

Thanks for the feedback. Weā€™re looking at moving the functionality of the Check Readiness step to the task sequence properties and this is one of the additions were considering. Please note this is not scheduled work yet.

  3. Integrate a References tab on Application objects

Application objects should have a References tab that is identical in functionality to the References tab on Task Sequence objects.

The current References tab in an Application object's properties is very limited (Shows App dependencies, App Supersedence, and Virtual Environments).

  4. Option to use SYSTEM context for detection method for a user-based application deployment

The application detection method only runs in the user context if it is deployed to a user collection. This would be reasonable if the Deployment Type user experience were set to "Install for User" (User context), however the detection method runs in the user context when this is set to "Install for system" installation behavior (SYSTEM context).

  5. Boot Image Password protection - make "enable command prompt" in boot images more secure

Make it possible to password protect the F8 command prompt during OSD.

the F8 support is very usefull for troubleshhoting but it is alos a security issue. Having two bootmedias (one with and one without) isn't a workaround since you will have to reboot to get the F8 support and the problem may not occur during the second atempt.

Allowing us to password protect the prompt gives a secure function that doesn't require a reboot when you have to troubleshoot.

  6. Support additional distmgr/pkgxfer manager component servers in primary sites to support load balancing of software distribution jobs.

Some primary sites have many remote distributed DP site systems and this can cause many content jobs to be managed by a single distribution manager / package transfer manager, which can cause delays and in some cases heavy server resource utilisation. I would like to see Sccm support load balancing of content jobs across a primary site.

  7. Implement reporting (tracking) for package on demand distribution

For the Feature described here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712321.aspx> Scenario 7 ability to distribute packages on demand - there is no way of traking or reporting if this was Happening to the package. I would like to have a report reflecting what packages have been initiated by this Distribution method. This might be be a package flag. Today the only way of seeing this is looking at the MP LM with advanced logging turned on finding

    <ProvisionDPRequest SchemaVersion="1.00"><Packages PackageID="CAS00010"><DP NALPath="["Display=\\wcp2.test.msft\"]MSWNET:["SMS_SITE=CP2"]\\wcp2.test.msft\" SiteCode="CP2"/></Packages></ProvisionDPRequest>

  8. Allow suppression of exit codes during Install Application Task Sequence Step

During an OSD deployment we install several applications that return a reboot exit code.

Each time they install they reboot, rebooting takes a minutes or two to restart the task sequence engine so each application is adding 2-3 minutes to the build time.

I would like to ignore these reboot exit codes because I know I will be rebooting at the end. We would prefer to not have a separate application for OSD and for Software Center.

  9. Client cache idea

I was at MMS and I know you guys are working on this, but I thought I would share a simple idea in case no one has thought of it. Make the current cache size setting into the "Base" cache size. Add a second setting called "Expanded" cache size. Normally the cache will be at the base size, but when it needs to download something larger than the base amount, the expanded setting kicks into effect. For the expanded setting, you specify "Use up to x% of free space on drive" The expanded setting would use as much cache asā€¦

  11. Combine ClientPatch and Patch property

The outdated ClientPatch folder in the 'Configuration Manager Client Package' is unsupported, however it is a great combination for retrieving from a local DP (leveraging the /mp-option to retrieve content based on boundaries) and getting the patch installed.
Considering that CCMEval also reruns with the last command-line used the availability of a ConfigMgr patch is vital (otherwise a 1635 error is generated if the new installation attempt can't access the MSP-file) perhaps the supported Patch-property and the ClientPatch-concept can be combined into a new supported way of deploying patches?

    The scenario would be as follows;
    CCMSetup detects that there isā€¦

  12. New-CMApplication rejects icons larger than 250x250

WARNING: The maximum size of an icon is 250px X 250px.

  13. Display Task Sequence Step no. in Task Sequence Editor

Display the Step No. in the Task Sequence Editor so it can be easier to find where in the TS an issue is occurring. This could be handy because you could have multiple steps of the same name (especially gather & User Toolkit)

  14. Package ID in Application list

Everytime I have an error in the "Distribution Point Configuration Status" I have to search for the "failed" application with the Package ID in the "Content Status". This works very slow! Please show the "Package ID" in the Appliaction List of the Console.

  15. Trigger Hardware Inventory After Installing Applications

Many ConfigMgr administrators set aggressive hardware inventory cycles for their client citing the need to keep an up-to-date inventory for the applications installed on their company's assets. Aggressive inventory cycles can obviously have a negative impact on site performance, and very often is unnecessary as there are frequently no changes to the inventory. Administrators can perform a work around by using wrappers or run additional programs to initiate a hardware inventory post install, however this causes an administrative overhead to installing applications.

I propose adding an option to application/package deployments that would trigger a hardware inventory after a successful installation.ā€¦

  16. BITS Priorities for User Initiated Deployments

Test in 1606: For User launched Application deployments (i.e Software Center) , the BITS job is created as FOREGROUND priority which can hog all of the available bandwidth on the machine.

Package/Programs downloads are launched with a BITS priority of LOW ā€“ please can we standardize on this for all user initiated content downloads.

  17. remove the hide button from computer restart Dialog that user cannot close

When using the client settings - computer Restart - display a dialog box the user cannot close... with a countdown interval , the dialog displayed show a hidden button that didn't work.
If people cannot hide the dialog, then why not 'hide' the hide button ? That button creates expectations that are not met, and thus frustration.

Allow 'Retiring' applications that in fact stop being deployed, without having to remove the 'Deployments' that contain tracking data about their previous installations.

  19. Make the ConfigMgr Admin console compatible with HoloLens!

How cool would it be to manipulate CONFIGMGR objects with your hands? Pickup a machine and literally throw it into a collection. Then pick up an Application and throw it on the same collection. Or view a report as if you were holding it in your hands?

  20. Viewing status of Deployments erases search results

When searching for deployments, say "May 2015", to see all of the Patch Deployments that you have recently deployed, once you double click/view status on a single one, you have to re-search for the "May 2015" deployments again. Suggest to use the Search Bar similar to the way that Explorer uses the Bread Crumbs on a search folder, so once you go back to the Deployments Tab, your original search criteria is there.
