How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Add TFPBlockSize and TFTPWindowsSize to the DP configuration page in the Admin Console

It would great to be able to configure TFTPBlocksize and TFTPWindowsSize on PXE-enabled DPs from the Configuraiton Manager console, and not having to edit the registry or to use Configuration Item/Baseline to do this. An option on the PXE tab in the Distribution Point properties please?!

  2. OS Deployment completion screen

Sometimes a task sequence can fail without the technican noticing the reboot countdown, so they just see a login screen and assume everything is okay. How about a "OS Deployment Failed/Succeeded" splash screen at completion? MDT (UDI) has a completion screen, although it doesn't show on error. Still - something like that.

  3. Allow Applications with interactive deployment methods in a task sequence

In SCCM 2007 we utilized package with multiple programs. One install program that was silent to be used in a task sequence. One with interaction (appdeploy toolkit e.g.) for distribution to existing PCs. Once we moved to application we created multiple deployment methods with the appropiate filters. However if one of the deployment methods does contain the 'allow interact' option the application can not be added to a task sequence even though there are deployment methods that would apply to a OSD situation were it would pick the non-interactive one. Would like to see a logic check in the task…

  5. Create folders under Software Updates

Allow the creation of folders under Software Updates\Software Update Groups, Deployment Packages and Automatic Deployment Rules.

  6. An option to install only on Corporate owned devices

Just as we can choose to only install applications on user's Primary devices, it would be great with the same option for Corporate Owned devices. Then we can deploy certificates, wifi, email, apps and so on to the User and if the user uses a Corporate owned device he will get it installed. It would save time, speed and preserve the User first concept!

  7. Revision History for task sequences

Could you add Revision History for task sequences? It would save you the effort of exporting and importing task sequences or keeping copies for References. This would be a nice to have feature in the Configuration Manager Console - although I'm sure we all have a scheduled job for exporting SCCM configuration automatically anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. Task Sequence export/import has Administrative comments field that can be used as well as the task sequence properties.
There’s no console versioning for task sequences currently but this is noted for future.

  8. Allow option for GPO processing during Task Sequence

Right now GPO processing is disabled during TS execution. This is annoying as quite often there's settings and environment configuration for a machine pushed by GPO, and right now they only apply at the end of the TS.

It would be nice to have an explicit "process group policy" step in a TS, which would be the equivalent of a "gpupdate /force".

  9. ConfigMgr SUM installs should update the date of last install in Windows Update control panel applet

When you only use ConfigMgr to install updates, the date on the Windows Update control panel applet often reflects something that is really inaccurate as ConfigMgr doesn't update it. This often leads to a very negative reaction of "I thought those darn ConfigMgr admins were updating our workstations and servers!?!" And then we have to explain that we are, but that date doesn't get changed.

Can we please just ensure that when Software Update Management installs any updates, the Windows Update control panel applet gets set to the current date?

I stole the screenshots from this thread: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b33dd5b2-64b3-476d-8fc5-232cbafced47/sccm-updates-are-installed-but-windows-update-status-wrong?forum=ConfigMgrCompliance

  10. SCCM Should Support Google Chromebooks/ChromeOS

This may be a long shot, but for K-12 educational customers, Chromebooks are some of the most popular student devices purchased. Continue the trend of "single pane of glass" in the Admin Console and help us manage our Chromebooks from SCCM/Intune.

  11. Mark easy way to query Driver Versions of all drivers on a system.

Please make an easy way to query Driver Versions of all drivers on a system from SCCM Hardware inventory without creating a custom MOF or looking at registry files? I found a forum thread on TechNet a few years old that said Microsoft said that using WMI class win32_pnpsigneddriver was unreliable and is why it was not available in SCCM hardware inventory and they were considering removing the class entirely. However the class remains in win 10 and is still the only way to query driver version using a script. It would be really useful to be able to have…

  12. Configuration Manager Remote Control Connection History

Having the ability to look through a dropdown history of connections would make reconnecting easier and shouldn't cause too much programming hassle.

Having a log of connections with date/time of connection/disconnection, IP of source and destination would also be valuable to have as reference.

  14. Install applications before users can press ctrl+alt+delete to login.

Add feature to deploy applications before users are allowed to logon at the ctrl+alt+delete screen. This would be a nice alternative to having to check for running processes before installing applications and would not interrupt users in their work.

  15. Remote Control features and improvments

I would like to thank Microsoft to allow their customers to share new and innovative ideas and I would like to present mine from my experience as Desktop Management Engineer in my company.
Initially we were using a comparative tool called LANDesk Management Suite and on the beginning of this year we have moved to SCCM 1511, since then I had received many complains about remote control comparing to the past experience.
I really like SCCM as a whole and I think it is really good tool and really nice features and constant updates, but not the remote control.
    I…

  16. Provide the ability to set an "expiration date" on a DEPLOYMENT

Even thought Applications are state based there are still use cases when a deployment could be expired so that no future deployments of that application will occur. Either an expiration or the use of automatically disabling the deployment, since Software Updates could be disabled so should Software Application Deployments. The reason to keep the deployment would be for reporting so a way to disable or expire would be ideal if state based is not needed.

The sms_applicationassignment WMI class exposes an ExpirationTime property which actually removes deployments from App Catalog but it does not work with software center.

  17. Better Task Sequence Step Options Tab Editor

Currently you can only remove and remove all from a task sequence option condition. I think it would be very helpful and time saving if you could copy/cut/paste conditionals from a right click menu.

  18. DCR: Boot Images. Provide an option to prevent re-downloading boot images (Boot / Prestage Media)

Scenario: You create a Boot Media or Prestaged Media. Current behaviour is that as long as the boot image version from creation date matches the version inside the infrastructure everything is fine. System is starting Windows PE and executes the Task Sequence. If you add for example a new driver now to the boot image the new version causes Configuration Manager to download the boot image inside Windows PE and another restart into the updated version of the boot image. In case of a Prestaged Media scenario this painful, as UEFI systems might no longer work.

    Possible SOLUTION: Add a…

  19. Application Dependency Management

Managing applications and understanding their dependencies is a significant challenge. Having the ability to understand what applications depend on system components, such as .NET or other, would be a significant benefit to ensure minimal production impact when working to upgrade an operating system or an application version. A recent example in a customers infrastructure was legacy software with dependencies on a specific version of .NET. Being able to see what these dependencies are ahead of time across the enterprise and manage them proactively would have been a huge win.

  20. Feature Request: Introduce a 'Remediate' option for Package/DPs for remediating package failures.

When a package fails to distribute to a DP, the only option right now is to 'Redistribute' the package to the DP. This is inefficient for large packages since 'Redistribute' transfers all package content to the DP even if some content may have already been transferred prior to the failure. For large packages, this not only takes a lot of time but consumes more network bandwidth than necessary.

When a package is 'added' to the DP, only the missing files are copied to the DP however there is no way to simulate an 'add' action from the UI.

    Having the…
