  1. OSD during WinPE and the need of disk for storage

Since bitlocker, UEFI with GPT and mSATA came in the picture to mention some disk-related stuff, I have struggle with OSD issues where the TS fails due to the lack of a non encrypted, partitioned regular disk to store content during the initial steps of a TS in WinPE
Here is an example, I get an OEM-installed laptop with SecureBoot and UEFI activated. To be able to install Windows 7 on this laptop I have to reconfigure the BIOS and disable SecureBoot and UEFI, fair enough. But to get the OSD TS to work I have to manually clean the…

The Task Sequence can be set to use ‘Run from Net’ – OS Image, Client Package etc. have to be set to use Package Share – part of the properties, visible on the ‘Data Access’ tab. Would that option help?

  2. Built-in Web Service for OSD tasks

Maik Koster has created an excellent Web Service for performing tasks e.g. during OSD, like removing a device from a collection. I think it would be a great idea to have a Site System Role for OSD where you have a built-in step in the TS to choose various tasks to perform during OSD.

  3. Have the ability to pre-deploy an available application on a user’s primary device.

Today in the application model you can only pre-deploy a required deployment of an application on the users’ primary device but this has 2 drawbacks:
    • Required means that the user doesn’t have the means to uninstall the application and potentially repair the application (uninstall+install).
    • Required means also that when the user logs on to another machine, maybe just to consult a web page, the required applications also get installed unless the global condition primary device equals true was set.
This is all about provisioning a new machine for a user. Of course there are always common applications, like…

  4. Control the order of software dependencies in app model

if i have multiple dependencies for an application(all different apps), there is no way to control the order in which they should be installed unless you create dependency group name with priority. In this example,i have no way to control the order of installation since they are all different category apps and cannot use dependency group.

  5. Improved alerting for SCEP

Configuration Manager allows the creation of subscriptions to alerts for the following Endpoint Protection events:

    • Malware outbreak - the same malware detected on multiple computers

    • Multiple malware detected on one computer

    • Same malware repeatedly detected on one computer

The ability to subscribe to alerts for these events is useful, but this feature could be improved.

For example, I don't need to be alerted when malicious JavaScript on a website is repeatedly detected and blocked on a user's computer, but there is no way to filter notifications for a specific class of threats. On the other hand, I do want to…

  6. Allow API integration for application approval requests

We would like to see a feature whereby the approvals workflow for applications can be handed off to an external system. For applications which require an approval or license acquisition workflow, capture the userID of the requestor and allow for some user-defined form fields to be shown to the end user.

For example, let's say my end users wants Visio but this requires a puchase of an individual license before they can install it. The app portal should allow capture of some user-defined fields (office location, fiscal approver, etc.) and we should be able to pass this to an external…

  7. Custom Error Codes for Chained Programs

Instead of "failing" and stop running on all non-zero return codes, allow acceptable return codes to determine if the install sequence fails or continues. Example, uninstall an MSI to be sure it's not there but if it's not, generates a 1605 return, yet this is really a soft error which we currently have to use a BAT or VB script so we don't get a "failure". It should be up to the engineer to determine what is and is not a "failure". Of course, out of the box any non-zero should continue to be a failure.

  8. Offline Image update on schedule

Option to Automatically update Offline Windows Image on schedule.

So that My Custom Windows 7 with preinstalled software will alway have all windows updates already in the image when its deployed.

An option in SCCM to pick few images that SCCM would automatically update on set time. Eg after patch tuesday. s

We took a look at this – one potential drawback is the there’s no user interaction meaning the updates applied would be what’s presented in the Offline Servicing view. That’s the default view – filtered for that architecture.

    Would that selection be acceptable?

  9. Deploy Package to Multiple Collections at one time

Allow packages to be deployed to multiple collections at one time. For instance I need AppX to go to Lab 1, Lab 2 and Lab4. Instead of going into AppX 3 different times to deploy, it would be nice to deploy it to all 3 labs at one time.

  10. More Intelligent Client Cache

With SCCM 2012 we got the single instance store on the back end which reduces the need for storage significantly on the server side but on the client side there's no optimization whatsoever.
If you for example have 2 applications or deployment types which are using the same or almost the same content they are downloaded both separately. This has a negatively impact on the disk space you need to reserve for the client cache but also on the bandwidth used to download almost twice the same content. I believe this can be done better.
    Many folks had to configure…

  11. Wake on LAN by maintenance window start time not deployment time

WOL packets are sent when a required deployment's time to install is hit. It would be nice if we could also set this to wake up machines by maintenance windows, or have a maintenance window that wakes up computers. What is the use of waking up a computer at the deployment start time of 7PM if the computer's maintenance window doesn't start until 10PM?

  12. Pop outs in the console

The console is not very multi-monitor friendly. There are many times where I have to keep switching between the monitoring tab and one of the other tabs to troubleshoot problems. It would be nice if we could pop out certain parts of the console into new windows. It would be nice if we could do this to every node, but just doing it to the five tabs (Tools also) would be great. I wouldn't have to have so many copies of the console open to get the job done.

  14. OSD - MDT like single instance drivers

SCCM started in the right direction with driver categories. This implementation has limited uses however.

I would like to see a driver management setup more like what is available in MDT. Specifically on deployment media.

  15. OSD - Domain Recovery

This was a great feature in MDT. If domain join fails initially, this can be used to launch a GUI informing the user or technician that the domain join failed and instructions on how to remediate this before deployment continues.

  16. Approval Requests Overhaul

The ability to add a note, and send a notification to the user if more information for their approval is required. Rather than denying it, and requiring them to re-submit, why not keep a single chain open?

Would also be nice if Approval instructions could be given for individual applications, informing the user the steps required for approval to be given. like submitting a ticket to a specific group, supplying approval from a manager.

  17. Catalog / Software Center should be usable by the blind

Screen reading assistants can't parse the app catalog - it just says "Silverlight" over and over. This isn't acceptable - web pages need to be usable by the blind.

  18. OS Deployment completion screen

Sometimes a task sequence can fail without the technican noticing the reboot countdown, so they just see a login screen and assume everything is okay. How about a "OS Deployment Failed/Succeeded" splash screen at completion? MDT (UDI) has a completion screen, although it doesn't show on error. Still - something like that.

  19. Better Driver and Driver Package Management

Driver Management within the console is unacceptably slow (still). We manage 60+ unique Models across Windows 7 all the way up through Windows 10. As a result there are a LOT of drivers to maintain and manage. With SCCM 2007, we had the ability to at least break these down in folders. With sccm 2012 you removed the ability to import directly to a folder. The trade-off was "categories" however, it is still incredibly slow to search for drivers.

In addition, with SCCM 2007, we could just fill a folder with inf's and create a driver package from that without…

  20. Deployment Status - Add Date Time Status Information

Deployment Status messages do not include the Date/Time that the status message are processed.

We need to have the Date/Time status on these messages, so that we can determine month to month what are the successful installations we are getting on our Application Cat.

One of the main drivers of our App Cat. is to reduce then # of tickets users put in to request software installations. By leveraging the App Cat. we are letting users Self Service many applications on their own.

When we add a new application to the Self Service catalog we need to track the time…
