How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Client does a full uninstall and forces deletion of CCM,CCMSetup and CCMCache directories

    On SCCM CB 1702
    Currently when you do:
A client push from the Console and select “Uninstall first”
    A manual CMSetup /uninstall
Neither will fully delete all 3 directories, leaving corrupted SQLCE/SDF files ( there may be others , but you get the idea)
I have had to resort to a rough script to meet my goals
    http://britv8.com/powershell-sccm-client-sledgehammer-aka-reset-cmclient/
A switch to nuke from orbit would be very useful in GUI and for CCMSetup

    • Add option for client upgrades outside maintenance windows

Mobile workstations may seldom be online during a maintenance window. We need a new option to allow for client upgrades outside of the maintenance window. Below is a suggested UI improvement to support such an option:

      • Add the ability to cleanup all drivers not contained in a driver package.

Currently there is no easy way to cleanup orphaned drivers. This feature would allow an administrator to easily clean up drivers that are no longer part of any driver packages.

Thanks for the feedback, your request was addressed in our 1806 release. I’ll close this item at the end of current release.

            For details, check https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/servers/deploy/configure/configure-discovery-methods

Search for ‘select subcontainers to exclude from this recursive search’

If you haven’t moved to 1806 yet or don’t have plans for the near future, you can check out this functionality in any of our Technical Previews after 1804 https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/get-started/capabilities-in-technical-preview-1804

            • Show missing dependencies in Tasksequence instead of Reboot

              Show missing dependencies!

Typically distribution errors (which occur automatically ******) lead to a well-known error in tasksequences:

              HRESULT=80040102
Failed to resolve selected task sequence dependencies.
              Exiting with return code 0x80040102
              TS environment is not initialized

OSD only shows "Preparing network connnections..." Then the WinPE tasksequence automatically reboots and boots the currently installed OS.

Why can't you just show or list missing packages?!?! Or add a skip option? Even SMSTS.LOG isn't helpful...

              • Send Client removal notification to MP to toggle installed flag

When a ConfigMgr client is removed from a computer the installed flag remains on Client=Yes, i.e. the real status is not being reflected in the console/database. Instead of relying on aging inventory and the "Clear install flag" maintenance task it would be much more transparent and efficient to send a heartbeat to the MP before the ConfigMgr client is removed to reset the install flag to Client=No. That way not only would the maintenance task be obsolete (there is still Delete Inactive Client Discovery Data to cleanup inactive computers), also a re-installation of the agent would be much faster than…

I'd like client uninstall option by right click. Which will be helpful to remove unwanted machines.

Shortcuts for the SCCM client should have the ability to be created on the start menu and the task bar. Today, the shortcut can only be created on the desktop

                    • Software installation notification

It would be a great option in App builder to be able to create a custom message that the user would see explaining why a software package is being installed or uninstalled. It would need a method of keeping it on the screen until the user clicks OK..

                      • I have a suggestion for the SMSSLP parameter and registry key.

I was investigating the registry Key SMSSLP under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CCM.

Most of my computers have a decommissioned Management Point in this Key. As far as I can tell this won’t have any effect. But this is confusing when troubleshooting client problems.

After some experiments these are my conclusions:
                        • The key is filled in when you use SMSMP=… as parameter for ccmsetup.exe.
                        • The key is read when you start ccmsetup.exe and then added to the command line as SMSSLP=…
                        • You can only change the key by adding SMSSLP=… yourself to the command line. (Or edit the registry of course.)

                        • Offline Deployments

I would like to suggest an option for "Offline Deployment" to allow customers with low/limited bandwidth to perform self installs while offline.
We have several low bandwith users (around 800) that basically live out of Hotels and secure locations. Deploying large packages/apps/Task sequences are always an issue because said deployments become available in Software Center, and yet the content has not arrived yet.
Due to the nature of their work, we need to give them the ability to deploy apps/packages/task sequences on their schedule. Once a package is made available, it shows up in Software Center yet the bits are…

                          • branch cache bandwidth throttle

Would love to see Branch Cache client check on the subnet before downloading and only have one client download per subnet. Also an end to end bandwidth throttling. Want to have the ability to configure the throttling for the 24 hours a day. Needs to check periodically to verify if any change in the network so adjust the download speed if necessary. By allowing only one per subnet, this lowers the congestion on the network and allowing peer sharing.

                            • Delayed Membership Rules

It would be useful to be able to add a new rule to a collection that does not take affect until a set time. For example, when a collection for software distribution has an advertisement associated to it, you might want to schedule another distribution by adding another collection that includes another group of devices. Right now we accomplish this by creating a new advertisement. It would be better if we could simply link a new collection specifying a date/time that the collection would become available to ingest the existing advertisement.

                              • Download content before starting required Task Sequence

If the task sequence is deployed as "Available" it's possible to download the content before starting TS. But if I create a "required" deployment it's not possible to download the content before the user gets the pop up to start the task sequence.
For the normal user is it not easy to find the TS in Software Center without any information. Because of this fact is it interesting to implement to pre-download function also to the "required" type.
First of all, the content should be downloaded and afterwards the user should see the pop up to start the TS/Operating System.

                                • Maintenance Window Reboot Process

                                  Consider 2 scenarios:

A group of servers host an application that requires services to be stopped and disabled before a reboot is initiated, then once all servers are online and responding, the services should be set to automatic and started again.

A group of servers related to a common application require an ordered reboot sequence. i.e. Update and reboot in this order: Server 1, Server 2, Server 3, Server 4. Simultaneous reboots are not supported, not recommended or cause issues with the application.

What I propose is an addition to the “Maintenance Windows” tab of a device collection that would…

                                  • Integrade Configure Manager Properties (Client) Behing Windows 10 new Settings

Windows 10's legacy Control Panel will probably disappear in a future. How about to extend CM client to show CM properties behind new Win10 GUI?

                                      • Increase maximum certificate key length for client certs

The current (1710) maximum key length for client authentication certificates is 2048 bits. Many security-conscious organizations standing up a new PKI in 2017-2018 would prefer a longer key length for all certificates. This requires that the organization lower their standards to utilize computer certificates for computer authentication.

                                        • Provide an option to automatically upgrade Client versions on PullDP

We found some strange behavior's when having a Pull DP deployed and will deploy a SCCM Agent later. This occurs only when the newest Client version has not been upgraded to production.
According to https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712321.aspx> the versions must be the same.
                                          ---
On a computer that is configured as a pull-distribution point and that runs a Configuration Manager client, the version of the Configuration Manager client must be the same as the Configuration Manager site that installs the pull-distribution point. This is a requirement for the pull-distribution point to use the CCMFramework that is common to both the pull-distribution…
