How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Allow Search for Site System Roles

When navigating to "Servers and Site System Roles" the view includes a "Type" Column but Admins need to click on each individual server to see which server roles are installed on them. The console should include a Site System Roles / Roles column that lists each installed roll separated by commas. This should also be searchable so that if Admins want to pull up say, all Management Points or all Distribution Points they can do so just by typing those terms or partial terms into the search box.

  2. Add a check box to Maintenance Tasks to disable all temporariliy

When doing an upgrade to SCCM, it has been recommended to disable some, or even all of the site maintenance tasks. (per the upgrade checklist) Would be awesome to have a box on the Maintenance Tasks screen to temporarily disable ALL tasks while the upgrade is being performed. (as opposed to manually disabling all of them) An "upgrade/maintenance mode" box essentially!

  3. If each ConfigMgr TP build does not get its own full install, provide a way to reset the expiration.

My ConfigMgr TP4 has expired. It is currently on build 1601. I cannot upgrade to 1603 to reset the expiration and I do not want to have to rebuild my entire test platform again to have a new activation.

  4. Add wizards for in-console updates

When doing the upgrade to 1602, there is not a very good visual indicator of progress without manually opening a log or moving to the monitoring tab. Would prefer to see a progress window open once the update or pre-req check has been started. (like you get when going through the normal setup)

  5. Put SCCM program updates back into WSUS/SUP

The way updates to SCCM is done now with version 1511 is a nightmare. Put it back into the WSUS/SUP like it was before as an option instead of forcing people to use the new way. The new method violates many security protocols for many organizations. We can't even get branch 1602 to download, not automated nor with the connection tool.

  6. Implement ability to target and control remote DP upgrade process

Current: If a site is upgraded to CM vNext (1603), all the remote site systems get upgraded automatically with no control

Ask: Implement functionality to target and control remote site system upgrade process. This could be done via collections or DP groups

Reason: It's too high risk with environments that have thousands of distribution points (pull DPs)

  7. Make internal SCCM Backup task mor flexible

Currently the SCCM backup task is interacting with the database directly creating a full backup every time. When using other backup products (as TSM) the use of SCCM backup and a full set of files is simply not possible since we increment the backup counter. TSM differential backups will not work until a new full backup has been run.
The ask is to either enable flexibility to be able to use different SQL backup mechanism apart from SCCM internal or to be able to run the backup task without triggering a SQL Backup.

  8. Allow More Clients To Be Supported on a Primary site

Ability to support more clients than 150k on a single Primary site. Our environments could get rid of bottlenecks and less administration overhead if there is no need to deploy a CAS. It would be great if a Primary site supports up to 200k clients, because we have currently 160k in our environment.

  9. When viewing Site Status, the disk size and free space columns don't sort correctly

If you view the columns for Total, Free and Free disk (%) in the Site Status under monitoring they appear to sort alphabetically rather than numerically. e.g. 1,12,19,2,27,276,28,6,78 instead of 1,2,6,12,19,27,28,78,276

  10. Improve automatic SQL configuration, tuning, and maintenance of the SCCM DB & SQL Server

Current architecture around SCCMā€™s management of SQL configuration and maintenance is old and hard to use. It requires a lot of manual oversight, and manual SQL tasks. And the default SQL settings created by SCCM are non-optimal. SQL is a powerful beast. Rethink ways SCCM can use it better, and keep it more optimally tuned and configured. Rethink how to run maintenance and backup tasks without downtime or impact to the production sites and deployments (this especially becomes more important with features like Conditional Access, that can never really have downtime.)

  13. Site Servicing status - monitoring node extension

Now as some customers donā€™t trust Microsoft that hard to send telemetry data , many valid questions at customers came up . Currently at my knowledge ( correct me if I am wrong ) , there is no status at the 1511 console thru the monitoring pane that says when :

    - The service Connection point is connected and up and running with what privacy mode (display mode only)ā€¦
    - The Service Connection point is healthy and when it did itā€™s last sync . They want an additional node like the software update sync status to see when it syncedā€¦

  14. Make installing sccm as easy as choosing a system role

Setting up a new sccm site server is much more complicated than it should be. We fork out licensing costs and then have to bring in consultants... An installer similar to the vcenter vsphere setup would be awesome, or better yet choose the role and off we go. We just need to provide a naked 2012 or 2016 server and the installer does the rest using the best practices for configuring sql.

  15. Display site system roles installed on boundary group references/resources

The introduction of preferred management points in SP2/R2 SP1 is GREAT! But I'd like to see the following added to the console to improve usability.

When viewing the properties of a boundary group in the console, you can add/remove site system servers on the 'References' tab. Pre SP2/R2 SP1, all you were adding here were DPs... now, those site systems can be DP's, MP's, and SMP's.

By simply looking at the list of site system servers, you cannot tell whether the server is a DP, MP, SMP, or any combination.

Please add 3 more columns or similar (one for eachā€¦

  17. Enable Performance Counters for all Components

Expose Performance Counters for all ConfigMgr Components, and extend beyond the basic performance counter-set on offer today.

This will allow us to implement solutions around monitoring the product in finer detail, as well as provide a rich backdrop for troubleshooting analysis.

  18. Service accounts should be domain aware to prevent account lockouts

Service accounts should be domain aware so that they do not attempt to authenticate against the wrong domain to lock out service accounts with the same username but on another domain.

  19. Automatically Open Firewall Ports on Server Install

Installation of SCCM and roles on site servers should enable any needed firewall ports. Recently had some SQL issues when migrating to a new SQL server that turned out to be related to the broker service port not being open. Application installs should open these ports automatically not force us to have to hunt down in obscure documentation what ports to open.

  20. Use SQL Backup with Compression for the backup task

With CM 1511, SMS Backup task enabled by default. And that does a volume shadow copy of the DB which means full-sized files. For my tiny lab that means I'm backing up 8 GB alone.

For production it'll mean 850GB per primary site. Under CM12 when we backup just SQL using compression, it's just 160GB per primary site.

Please allow an option to just invoke a database backup instead so that compression can be used and I don't need to go order terabytes of data just for backups.

Also the current backup just erases the last backup. But in aā€¦
