How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  1. When updating content, wait to remove old content

When updating content, don't automatically remove the old content on the DP's until the copy starts. Sometimes what happens is if there is a slow content transfer already taking place. The new content update waits for it to complete before it starts the transfer, so during that time the old content is not available (causing task sequences, packages, and applications that use the content to fail).

  2. Allow exclusions in ConfigMgr content folders

When selecting a content location it would be nice to be able to add a list of folders (and possibly files) to exclude from the content. e.g. we often include an installation wrapper script in the content that drives the installation or removal process for applications / packages it would be nice to include them in a small git repository in situ. While we can do this now ConfigMgr copies the repo as part of the content. It would be nice to be able to exclude it from content replication / delivery / caching.

  3. LiveFlow of DP to Network

Currently there is no centralized way within ConfigMgr to determine if the expected desire of boundaries for content / site assignment works as expected. As boundaries can be configured in multiple ways (subnet, ad, range etc) and also allows to fallback between different servers - it would be good to allow insight into what clients from what networks are connecting to a DP to retrieve content. This would allow if the current design works as expected.

    Information that would be useful for on-prem DP;
    1. Devices (COUNT?) connecting from network (initial octets/subnet-mask)
    2. Connectivity type: local, remote, fallback etc...

  4. Point and Deploy to Single Machine or small group of machines/users.

Remove the extra steps to create a collection of one or more existing machines to deploy a program or application or task sequence to.

When needing to do a small targeted and IMMEDIATE deployment the admin should be able to right click and pick what to deploy and when he hits ok an adhoc collection should automatically be created into a default folder, say call it "Adhoc Collections" which without any keystrokes, mouse clicks or mouse swipes would be created in that folder with a name starting with the date in format YearMonthDay-Hour:Minute:Second-(Package | App Name | Task sequence|)-CreatorName

  5. Enable install of Office 365 with Intune Hybrid using the Office CSP

Can you allow add the ability to deploy Office 365 using the Office configuration service provider: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/mdm/office-csp

  6. Move inboxes

    inboxes\despoolr.box\receive
Get full depending on the size of the deployments.

Being able to move this to another drive so that the isntallation drive doesn't get filled up.

  7. Fix the issue that automatically adds UTC time in the console in local time when scheduling a deployment...

Not sure why but after this last update, whenever I deploy software SCCM automatically adds 5 hours to the local time which is the time difference from Chicago time to UTC...

  8. Can't run ContentLibraryCleanup.exe on DPs in other domains

The ContentLibraryCleanup.exe will only execute in the domain that the primary site is in. I have a flat SCCM structure with only a primary site server and multiple distribution points. The DPs that are in the same domain as the primary work fine. If the DP is in an untrusted domains, the ContentLibraryCleanup.exe failes to run and returns and access denied message.

  9. Content Library Cleanup Tool - improve error handling

While using the Cleanup tool I've encountered a few occasions where it crashes out with file access errors. It crashes to the command prompt and all previous activity is lost as it doesn't get logged. Is it possible to improve the error handling of the tool that it logs access errors instead of throwing an exception? I've included a sample of the exception error message below.

System.IO.IOException: Access to the path '\\mydistpoint.com.au\SCCMContentLib$\DataLib\Content_27822e98-f79a-436a-af07-fa88beac76c5.1\Templates' is denied.

  10. Ability to set DP Reserved Disk Space from the GUI

There is no option currently to set a DPs reserved disk space except with and SQL query and reg change. It would be good to be able to do this via a GUI option.

  11. Fix SCCM Content Validation to be able to validate even when the Content Location Folder is empty

Fix SCCM Content Validation to be able to validate even when the Content Location Folder is empty.

If you send content to a DP and it has a content location but the folder has nothing in it, you will be able to send the content to the DP just fine but the Content Validation will fail when it runs.

  12. Use the content library also for client cache

Please bring the Content Library to the Client Cache. That would be nice to have in some cases only a sync Methode instead of downloading over BITS a kompressed file.

  13. Calendar integration for file replication schedule

add possibliy to import or set calendar. This would allow to take care about public holidays concerning file replication schedules. On limited file replication settings this would allow a faster replication during off-hours of remote locations e.g in other countries with different calendar.

  14. STOP accidental deployment or content transfer

The bigger question is Can SCCM Admins undo accidental deployments? Do they have any out of box controls in SCCM to STOP the deployment they initiated by mistakenly?. SCCM is still missing that big RED button to stop all the initiated deployments. SCCM / ConfigMgr doesnā€™t have any mechanism to stop the package replication or traffic over the WAN immediately.

  15. Allow DP Distribution Throttling Based on Day

Currently you can configure Content Distribution Rate Limits to throttle based on the hour of the day. It would be nice to be able to make this different depending on the day of the week. For instance, I'm provisioning some new DPs, and I want the floodgates of content throttled M-F, but I don't care if it opens wide on the weekends when almost nobody is working anyway.

  16. Removing entries from Peer Cache

    As per the discussion here:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/plan-design/hierarchy/client-peer-cache
When deleting a client from ConfigMgr the associated peer cache entries are not removed. It is my opinion that they should be...

I would like to see a configurable method such that content that hasn't been recently verified as available in a client's peer cache is not returned as an available location. ie. Remove the peer cache referrals for content that has not been verfied as available within the past week etc...

  17. TRusted Source locations - Complete the Trusted Source story

I would like to see Trusted Source locations to be added to ConfigMgr as a Node in Administration, and permission so that only Full Administrator or a specific RBA Role can manage these locations.

All ConfigMgr wizards that allow path data-entry will be changed to become a drop down list of approved Trusted Source locations. The User will be able to navigate into the folder structure of the Trusted Source location, creating new directories with a restriction on placing content on the root of the Trusted Source location, since this can induce data-loss if the sub-folder is not specified inā€¦

  19. ContentLibraryCleanup Distribution Point Maintenance Mode

I love the ContentLibraryCleanup tool, but in the small environment I'm working with about 10 remote DPs, the tool takes a really long time to run. On 2 of our DPs, it took 2 days each to run. Because it took so long, they both failed because at the end the tool reported that a particular package wasn't fully replicated yet.

We'd like a way to do the following:

    1. Put a DP in Maintenance Mode. This would let Content currently being deployed to the DP to complete (basically coming to a soft stop), but would stop new content fromā€¦

  20. Source DP prioritization during refresh content/MS package update over other DPs

During content refresh or MS SUP cleanup content update requests get sent to all pull/DPs. However, Source DPs do not have the content present and therefore the child DPs cause extra messaging stating content not present in DPs. request that Source DPs get priority when updating content prior to request being sent out to DP to download/update content
