How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Upload packages to Distribution Point

Sometimes the admin isn't local to the Primary site. This can make creating and uploading packages a painful process. Allow an admin to upload that shiny new WIM package to a local DP and have the DP be capable of pushing back to the "hub" that is the Primary Site. This will allow much faster uploading from the admin perspective (content available immediately locally even if not for hours at other locations).

This one may be a pipedream ... but it's one of the last hurdles to never installing another Primary if you're sub 100k devices.

  2. Ability to change distribution point settings easily after initial config.

It would be nice to be able to adjust certain settings of a distribution point after its been configured.

    Examples:
The primary and secondary drive for the content library and package shares.
    The drive space reserve
    The host name

  3. Add an option to update only Install or Uninstall content of a deployment type

It is great that you can now provide a separate Install/uninstall content location for a deployment type of an application. This is very useful for large applications.

However, there is one major limitation: You cannot update just uninstall (or install) content. If you have updated your uninstall script, the current Update content task will try to update both install/uninstall content.

Even though you haven't changed anything in your install content, it will takes ages for large applications, before SCCM understands that install content has not been modified.

It would be so much faster if you could just initiate "Update uninstall"ā€¦

  4. Move inboxes

    inboxes\despoolr.box\receive
Get full depending on the size of the deployments.

Being able to move this to another drive so that the isntallation drive doesn't get filled up.

  5. Content validation

At SCCM you can validate Content only for one Device or you have manny work to validate Content at all Devices. With waork around right click tools you can validate content for all Devices. Implementing the right click solution and it will a better work with Content

  6. Display Content Status on Content Tab of Distribution Point Properties

On the Content tab in a Distribution Point's properties add a column to display the current content status (Success, In Progress, Failed). This would make it easy to see what content has not yet made it to a DP while on the screen where it would also be easy to Redistribute the content.

  7. Content Status Node - have "Pending" column as a default column?

Be nice to see the Pending column as a default column instead of adding it each time.

  8. Shorten Pull-DP retry interval

Reduce the amount of time between when content distribution is completed on a Standard DP and when its Pull DP begins to transfer. Consider using some type of notification to the Pull DP that it may begin instead of having it just wait when it could be pulling.

  9. update distribution point on a schedule

when we want to schedule an update for a package, if you enter a previous date than the current one (due to an error) you don't receive an advertisement message telling you that date is anterior. If you click OK, then package is update immediately!

    Thank you

  10. Update content on Distribution Points ā€“ allow use of revision N-1 content in Task Sequences

We are supporting companies around the globe out of our Configuration Manager; it goes from Australia to Americas. So, we have all the time someone deploying a machine using the OSD task sequence. But we also have to update content used in the Task Sequence.
If ā€˜Update Distribution Pointsā€™ is started and a new revision is created, the content goes in yellow (in Progress) on all DPs. If you now want to start a Task Sequence, it will fail due to missing content. If some DPs have blackout times, e.g. not allowed to replicate content during daytime, it is evenā€¦

  11. Active Driectory: LAPS and BitLocker

It would be nice if SCCM could pull the LAPS passwords into a table. And while we are at it the BitLocker recovery key. These are the 2 most important things to have if an AD computer account were to get deleted for some reason. We could then limit access to the data and write reports for it. I'm assuming that the information would get updated as part of some AD info sync process. The data would need to be non-volatile in case the AD account is deleted at least the information would be in the SCCM database. Maybe alsoā€¦

  13. Fix out of sync content on the Distribution Point

At times, the distribution point will complain that there is a mismatch between the package list on the file system and the package list in WMI.

    The warning presented is as:

Failed to retrieve the package list on the distribution point.
Or the package list in the content library doesn't match the one in WMI. Review smsdpmon.log for more information about this failure.

    See attached error dialog.

The fix is to manually force the WMI list to match the content lib list.

I'm unsure what causes them to become mismatched, but it would be nice if MS could either fixā€¦

  14. Add the in console editing of distribution point priority value.

It would be helpful to be able to prioritize the DPs beyond the two options available. This would be especially helpful for ADRs where we want to get the new content into our test DPs quickly, but pilot and production can replicate much slower.

  15. content repliction

    Dear sccm Team,

we have a lot of middle sized Locations with max. 2 Mbps Connections that hold distribution points and we often have issues replicating. It would be great to leverage something like DFSR (with cross file remote differential compression). Also it would be great if we finally could copy single files between DPs when there were issues during DP update for a package. Wouldn't that be possible with a small command that verifies checksum and updates the CM database Information.

    Thx
    Sebastian

  17. content distribution settings groups

Like many things in SCCM you can create groups/collections to manage settings for several objects at once.

It would be useful to be able to create 'content distribution settings groups' that would allow you to specify the distribution settings for a group of applications.

For example, being able to group together applications/packages that run in a task sequence and using the group to set distribution settings to 'High' to ensure content is distributed quicker.

Or being able to group Update Deployment Packages together.

By default everything could be added to a 'default' group with 'Medium' settings.

  18. Cloud DP certificate expiration should be more discoverable

I had a situation where the DP certificate in the cloud had expired and stopped communicating. I would like to suggest if it would be possible to create an alert for this in Overview -> Alerts -> Subscriptions an option to create an alert by email informing the certificates that will expire within 30 days. Or even another way to see this, because in this case the client does not have SCOM in the environment. only the SCCM.
    Thanks for listening

  19. Delivery Optimization Boundary Groups

When working with Delivery Optimization (DO), today DO can't tell the difference between a site assignment Boundary Group (BG) and a content BG. Can DO be setup to have some kind of logic around site assignment and content BGs?

  20. Add a destination MP option for Pull Distribution Points

Currently Pull Distribution Points may not be able to report their status to a given Management Point in their site (i.e., a remote site system in a DMZ). To reduce delays, I think a Management Point option should be added for Pull Distribution Points so administrators can choose which MPs a Pull DP reports to instead of having all MPs loaded into the registry (the ManagementPoints string value). The UI could look similar to the "Source Distribution Points" tab within a Pull DP's properties. Multiple MPs could be defined with priorities. If an administrator didn't define this, at least oneā€¦
