How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  1. Add a security property to restrict users from enabling incremental updates on collections.

A property within security roles needs to be made available for assignment which restricts users from enabling incremental updates.

    • All devices are part of the same server group - Dont display any message for the client if the threshold is exceeded

The "All devices are part of the same server Group" is a great feature, however, if you tick the check box for a collection, and the number of devices in that collection trying to install an update exceeds the threshold set, an error is displayed in Software Center saying "0x87D00666 - Software updates cannot be install outside service window". If the reason for the Update not to be installed is because of a threshold, it would be better if either no message is displayed at all, or a message telling the user that the update is queued and will be…

      • Collections, View device model as additional column

I would like to be able to view the device model information within a collection from the admin console\device collections. This currently does not seem to be available from the menu when I right click on a collections column headings to add more columns.

I believe this may be useful as an additional way to ensure that mistakes have not been made when creating queries to populate collections with specific models\manufacturers.

As an example, I created a collection for a specific manufacturer that the computer object also had membership of a specific Active Directory OU. This resulted in the collection…

        • Collection search function should have history

Often when we search collections we are searching for something we've searched for before. The search box should maintain a history of previous searches.

          • Collections - save details for username "created by" and SCCM "console path" in the database

Collections - save details for username "created by" & "last modified by" and SCCM "console path" in the database. This would help with collection housekeeping in contacting the owners and deleting unnecessary collections.

            • Display Collections "Evaluate time left" & "Incremental time left"

A feature to view the collections time left to evaluate and also the incremental time too.

This will help the SCCM admin to troubleshoot the endless amount of collections that have no members, poorly written queries and put a stop to unreachable incremental deadlines for the evaluation to complete. (A recent customer I have visited has all the above issues)

At a glance through the views, you will be able to see column info like:
Start Time: 09:10 and End Time: 09:45 etc.

A bonus would be to have a breakdown pivot table report of all collections showing the following:

              • Make "Pending Restart" available under "Add Criteria"

Having the possibility to add Pending Restart as an option under Add Criteria for devices would be great.

                • Send E-mail directly to people in collections

It is often during patching and upgrading, wanted to send a Notification mail to People in a special build Collection. This would simplify operations, and prevent a lot of extra incidents during maintenance.

                  • Schedule a deployment for X days after the 2nd Tuesday of the month (example)

Sometimes the the second Tuesday (as an example) could be 7 days into the month, other times it could be much longer. Allow all schedules to be X days after a 1st/2nd/3rd mon/tue/wed/thur etc

                        • Correct behavior of the "Add Resources" button (SCCM all versions).

Correct behavior of the "Add Resources" button (SCCM all versions).
When you use the "add resources" (to collection) button it uses the RBAC_InstancePermissions and does not take into account the limiting collection.
This is a problem in an environment where people take up different roles. For instance when you have different geographical units (each with limiting collections) and people have an additional read-only role for example for everything.

In this case the code behind a "direct membership" rule has the correct behavior, while the code behind the "add resources" button allows to add any resource.
                          Since the "add resources" button…

                              • collections sort by deployments

add a filter-able column to device collections for "Deployment Count" similar to referenced collections. that way I can easily find collections that have deployments, rather than sorting through hundreds of deployments or thousands of collections to the collections that have deployments.

                                • Fix collection update engine

The way collection membership updates are handled is completely flawed. Should this be fixed, the (soft) limit of collections that can have incremental updates enabled should also be changed.

We all know that when a collection is updated, all collections limited to it are also updated. And should any of the children collections be updated, then so will the children of the children, and so forth and so on.

However, there is a massive design flaw that in this system that means a huge number of collections that should *never* be updated are being updated.

                                  Imagine this scenario:

                                  CollA is…

                                    • "Primary User" or "Last Logged on User" in the NON SERVER COLLECTION?!

Right now while your looking at any collection there no way to add a drop down for "last logged on user" or "primary user"

IF you check the properties for individual devices you can get this info. Its very frustrating we cannot see this info in the console page!

PLEASE let me know if there is any workaround or if you can add this - Ive literally seen 10's if not 100's of forum threads asking for this exact same thing to be added!!!!!

                                      • Collection Columns

Is it possible/can we please implement the ability to load collected system or user discovery data as columns for collections and the Users/Devices areas?

(May be duplicated with an idea inside an idea of another Collection idea, but I did my fair share of browsing before posting this...)

Currently there are only five or six columns available for the Users area in the console, and the ability to display custom collected active directory information from system discovery as a column such as 'Managed By' or 'Description' for a device in the devices area isn't available. Inclusively, data collected from the…

                                        • Limiting Collection Notification

When a device is added to a collection but is not a member of the limiting collection(s), there should be a prompt that notifies the user of this and what collection(s) the device needs to be a member of first.
