How can we improve Configuration Manager?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

Allow for the ability to create a collection/query based on computers that can install a specific driver using hardware IDs collected and match against compatible hardware IDs in the driver inf file. This would help to determine what drivers are compatible with what computers in a more efficient way. Then deploy the driver package to those computers to update (using devcon.exe or similar). Third party driver management (through updates catalogs) are still storage hungry and cumbersome. This would be a very effective solution.

  2. SCCM Device Collection Query Rule Check

When creating or modifying a device collection using a query rule can SCCM include an option to provide an output of the results before applying. Maybe it could open in Monitoring > Queries to show the results and then once verified the Apply button can be clicked. This could prevent a mis-configured query resulting in deployments to devices that were added inadvertently. It could also reduce a step from having to create an actual query and then importing that query.

  3. Server Groups - Non Clustered Servers

Can we increase the functionality of the Server Groups feature on collections to allow us to control non-clustred servers

For example, when patching I have a collection for Hyper-V hosts, but want to ensure that onyl one Host is down at any one time, and not all of them at once!

  5. Choose subfolder when creating a new collection from the right-click menu

When you use the right click menu to add a user or device to a new collection (which opens the wizard to create a new collection), it defaults to the root collection node. We manage our collections with multiple folders and sub-folders, and it would make management easier if we could change the location where the new collection will be created instead of tracking it down after creation and manually moving it to the desired location.

  6. Create device collection from search results

It would be nice to be able to easily create a device collection from search results, such as the search results from clicking a section of pie chart in Office 365 Client Management for instance. When you click on a section of pie chart, it takes you to Assets and Compliance and creates a search under devices. It would be nice to right click on that search result and have a choice to Create Collection from Results.

  7. Maintenance Windows for select applactions

Apply Maintenance Windows to Select applications. Example you have a collection of machines that have VPN client installed. You apply Maintenance window to enforce updates at night while ensuring that it doesn't during the day.

As the same time this machine is part of another collection that has applications you don't mind it updating in the middle of the day.

  8. Delete Collection UI Issue

When an administrative user who does not have permission to delete resources tries to delete a collection, the confirmation UI displayed reads as though the resources WILL be deleted due to the missing checkbox. Perhaps changing the UI so that the checkbox is there but grey'd out as unchecked or remove the "Delete each collection member from the database" text.

  9. Maintenance window recurrence pattern offset from a base day

Allow the recurrence pattern for maintenance windows to be scheduled with an offset from a base day.

Meaning, if we want a maintenance window on the Wednesday following the Second Tuesday of every month, we could configure a maintenance window for the Second Tuesday with a +1 offset.

(This would be similar to the offset option added to ADRs in 1802.)

  10. Override maintenance windows

Allow local admins to bypass the maintenance windows for deployments even if the deployment is hidden in the Software Center. Allow this on collections and individual clients. Usually needed for short notice deployments in education.

  11. Right-click Collection Deployments to View Deployment Status

I find it would be handy when viewing deployments to a collection, if a Right-Click option existed to view status - i.e. open the deployment status (Monitoring/Deployments/[Deployment]/Status).

  13. SCCM Collection Alert

Add a Collection Alert that allows you to generate an alert if Collection Membership falls below threshold (% or Count).

This will be useful, for example, if we have a pilot group collection that isn't dynamic and machines get removed because they were replaced and don't get put back in the collection. This way we know that more device resources need to be added to the collection.

  14. Maintenance Windows to allow Exploit Guard Settings

Provide additional option for Exploit Guard in drop-down list of Maintenance Windows in addition to the existing options (Software Updates, Task Sequences, All).

As the existing Maintenance Windows restrict Exploit Guard Settings to be applied unless ALL or no Maintenance Window is configured. This means that instant changes cannot be applied if the organisation has maintenance windows defined. If a new maintenance window is created with ALL settings then it can lead to reboots and Software updates applying to Windows 10 devices as well.

  15. "server group"

Add a confirmation window when enabling the Server Group setting on a collection. The placement of the checkbox is very similar to the Incremental Updates checkbox on the following tab. Have seen some admins enabling it by mistake, which causes problems.

  17. Phased deployments - Parent/Limiting and Child Collections

When creating a phased deployment, I would like to define a parent collection (for example, “All Win7” workstations) that will serve as a limiting collection for the collections defined on each phase. This would allow me to create collections for each phase (like rings; for example: Canary, Pilot, Production) that could be used across various phased deployments.

That way, if I target a Windows 10 Upgrade TS to my “All Win7” collection, with phases targeting the Canary, Pilot, and Production collections, it would go like this:
    - PCs in the Canary collection that are also in All Win7
    - PCs…

  18. Allow using SMS_R_USER and SMS_R_SYSTEM together when making query-based collections.

If you try to write a query to generate a collection that attempts to cross reference objects between the SMS_R_USER & SMS_R_SYSTEM databases, you will get an error.

This prevents you from being able to create a collection of systems based on the last user that logged onto a machine. It's also just frustrating.

  19. Allow export of Collection queries to a Query

We, like many institutions, have experienced "Collection Creep", over the years, that is, we have accumulated many collections which are no longer necessary for software distribution. The logic used in these collections however is still valid and can occasionally be useful, so it would be very handy if we could simply export the logic to a query, which could then be run as required. It could be designed so that an include or exclude could also include the logic from those collections, and restricted to only work on Query-based collections.

  20. Collections should have a column for IP address

When a collection of computers is opened we should have the option of displaying a column with the machines IP address. Or 2 columns, one for IPV4 and another for IPV6.
