  1. OSD during WinPE and the need of disk for storage

Since bitlocker, UEFI with GPT and mSATA came in the picture to mention some disk-related stuff, I have struggle with OSD issues where the TS fails due to the lack of a non encrypted, partitioned regular disk to store content during the initial steps of a TS in WinPE
Here is an example, I get an OEM-installed laptop with SecureBoot and UEFI activated. To be able to install Windows 7 on this laptop I have to reconfigure the BIOS and disable SecureBoot and UEFI, fair enough. But to get the OSD TS to work I have to manually clean the…

The Task Sequence can be set to use ‘Run from Net’ – OS Image, Client Package etc. have to be set to use Package Share – part of the properties, visible on the ‘Data Access’ tab. Would that option help?

    • Built-in Web Service for OSD tasks

Maik Koster has created an excellent Web Service for performing tasks e.g. during OSD, like removing a device from a collection. I think it would be a great idea to have a Site System Role for OSD where you have a built-in step in the TS to choose various tasks to perform during OSD.

      • Offline Image update on schedule

Option to Automatically update Offline Windows Image on schedule.

So that My Custom Windows 7 with preinstalled software will alway have all windows updates already in the image when its deployed.

An option in SCCM to pick few images that SCCM would automatically update on set time. Eg after patch tuesday. s

We took a look at this – one potential drawback is the there’s no user interaction meaning the updates applied would be what’s presented in the Offline Servicing view. That’s the default view – filtered for that architecture.

          Would that selection be acceptable?

        • OSD - MDT like single instance drivers

SCCM started in the right direction with driver categories. This implementation has limited uses however.

I would like to see a driver management setup more like what is available in MDT. Specifically on deployment media.

          • OSD - Deploy TS to User groups

Would be nice to be able to advertise Task Sequences to specific users or groups. We have some operating system deployments that we would like only certain users to run, support staff for instance.

            • OSD - Domain Recovery

This was a great feature in MDT. If domain join fails initially, this can be used to launch a GUI informing the user or technician that the domain join failed and instructions on how to remediate this before deployment continues.

              • OS Deployment completion screen

Sometimes a task sequence can fail without the technican noticing the reboot countdown, so they just see a login screen and assume everything is okay. How about a "OS Deployment Failed/Succeeded" splash screen at completion? MDT (UDI) has a completion screen, although it doesn't show on error. Still - something like that.

                • Better Driver and Driver Package Management

Driver Management within the console is unacceptably slow (still). We manage 60+ unique Models across Windows 7 all the way up through Windows 10. As a result there are a LOT of drivers to maintain and manage. With SCCM 2007, we had the ability to at least break these down in folders. With sccm 2012 you removed the ability to import directly to a folder. The trade-off was "categories" however, it is still incredibly slow to search for drivers.

In addition, with SCCM 2007, we could just fill a folder with inf's and create a driver package from that without…

                  • Allow option for GPO processing during Task Sequence

Right now GPO processing is disabled during TS execution. This is annoying as quite often there's settings and environment configuration for a machine pushed by GPO, and right now they only apply at the end of the TS.

It would be nice to have an explicit "process group policy" step in a TS, which would be the equivalent of a "gpupdate /force".

                    • SCCM Task Sequence Lock

Enable the ability to Lock a Task Sequence once it has been released, similar to the effect when a TS is locked out to a user when editing it. In a large environment with multiple SCCM admins using OSD is you be a nice feature to prevent accidental editing of production Task Sequences.

                      • Add Retry Count and Delay between to Task Sequence

Add a retry count and delay between retry properties to at least the most critical task sequence steps, if not all, so that we can make task sequences more resilient when there are hiccups to servers or network.

                          There’s also:
SMSTSMPListRequestTimeout – Specify how many milliseconds a task sequence waits before it retries to install an application after it fails to retrieve the management point list from location services. By default, the task sequence waits 60 seconds before it retries the step 3 times

SMSTSDownloadRetryCount – Controls the number of times that Configuration Manager attempts to download content from a distribution point. By default, the client retries 2 times.

SMSTSDownloadRetryDelay – Controls the number of seconds that Configuration Manager waits before it retries to download content from a distribution point. By default, the client waits 15 seconds before retrying.

                          SMSTSWaitForSecondReboot –
                          https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2894518/task-sequence-fails-in-

I’ll close this item out once our 1902 release is completed.

                        • Be able to specify the deployment type when pushing applications

One of the biggest issues I have with the new applications vs packages is the inability to specify deployment types in task sequences. I usually write 2 or 3 different DT's. One silent, one noisy (For self serve) and one uninstall.

                          • Switch to let SCCM install applications in OSD via admin account instead of trusted user

SCCM is great for deploying OS's, and MDT is great for customizing those images. I'm asking for a switch that allows SCCM to act like MDT when it comes to installing and customizing a reference image.

                            • Run PowerShell Script item in Task Sequences should allow alternate credentials

Right now, if I need to run a PS script in a Task Sequence requires to use the Run Command Line item using PowerShell.exe. However, if I want to run a script with parameters, then I must use the -command option for PowerShell.exe, which has some odd parsing problems that can cause scripts to fail when run this way.

                              • Interactive step during OSD (or any other TS)

To be able to add an interactive step when running a TS would be useful in many cases. You might not always want to run an OSD as User Driven, but still in one step you want user input.
Not only for production, but for test purposes this would be really good.

Today, I'm running a very customized solution to make this happen.
I created this one in order for this to happen, it should be easier.

                                • Implement service/feature in OSD that picks up first free Computername from AD and sets it as Computername for New-Deployment OSD.

Now I need to make manual scripts and additional web services for OSD to automatically pick up first free computer name from AD and set it for New deployment, it would be nice if SCCM could do it using inbuilt feature.

                                  • Fix the Software Update Task Sequence (built-in TS patching during OSD)

How is this still a problem? Ask any MVP and they all agree: the built-in task sequence for patching during OSD doesn't work. It doesn't survive double reboots, it has a upper patch limit before it crashes ... it's basically garbage. I don't mind making golden images in MDT, but I shouldn't _have_ to ... and yet I do. I makes SCCM feel less like a singular solution.

Today we published a new article and related flowchart to provide some insight and guidance for using the Install Software Updates task sequence step.

                                    • Result screen for Collection & Machine variables

At most of my customers, we are working with collection- or machine variables to be flexible during OS deployment with languages, application installations or something else.
In some cases, there are so much collections with different variables, that it is very hard to find where a variable is coming from.
Perhaps, you can use a dialog in context menu of a device like 'client settings' - 'Resultant Client Settings'.
In this dialog, collect every variable with it's source like
                                      Variable 1 - Collection x
                                      Variable 33 - Collection Z
                                      Variable 232- Machine Variable

Or a better implementation of Ben Hunter's script.
