  1. PXE Boot menu with selection of additional images (e.g. MDOP DaRT)

There is a buisiness need to be able to select a different bootimage as the one linked to a task sequence. This can be used for administrative tasks of a client such as booting MDOP DaRT over the network. Implement the ability to define which bootimages can be selected at a TFTP boot. (Of cause, OSD is only possible with the image linked to the task sequence)

    • Allow for dynamically selecting Apply Driver Packages

Allow for dynamically selecting Apply Driver Packages, pretty much like it works for normal packages (applications). This would reduce the number of hardcoded Apply Driver Package in the task sequence.

      • Task Sequence Editor Search

We have over 300 Groups/Steps in a couple of our task sequences. It would be really helpful to be able to search with the Task Sequence Editor. Either by step name or group name. In a perfect world it would be helpful to search descriptions or other text content within each group or step.

        • Support the imaging of machines with multiple hard drives/NICS without having to uninstall/disable/remove HD's or NIC's.

Having to unplug, remove, or disable multiple NIC's/HD's is cumbersome, especially in the server environment, not to mention techs often forget.

Can you add more details on what the issues you encounter with multiple NICs/HDs, please?

          • Support MUI for the "Restart Computer" TaskSequence action description visible to the user

Especially in MUI environments explaining why a reboot is required can lead to confusion on the users side. Supplying a short description is nice already, but it would be even cooler if it was configurable based on the users display language.

            • settings per task sequence

MDT 2010 had the ability to run different settings in customsettings.ini for each task sequence. This feature was removed in MDT 2012. I would like to request that it is brought back. Currently, the only method to have the functionality back is to edit DeployWiz_Validation.vbs, see https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/e17a1952-d1f7-41ef-8231-0d6fcc41882e/mdt-2012-settings-per-task-sequence?forum=mdt

              • Add processor architecture (x64/x86) to Check Readiness step

Some task sequences can run only on the correct processor architecture e.g. cannot upgrade Win7 x86 to Win10 x64 or cannot install x64 OS to 32 bit device.

Add processor architecture (x64/x86) to Check Readiness step. Thus, the incorrect task sequence is immediately canceled if you try to install wrong architecture TS.

                • More meaningful TS error messages in UI (no more 0x80004005!)

When a task sequence fails, the most common error message that you see is 0x80004005 which is useless. Normally, you get much better information from SMSTS.log file, but there are scenarios when you cannot access SMSTS.log.

There must be a way to provide more meaningful error messages in UI when a task sequence fails.

Thanks for the feedback. We have made some improvements to the task sequence monitoring – adding columns for Exit Code and Action Output to the status view.

We’ve more work to do replacing use of Generic E_FAIL with more meaningful error codes.

                  • Allow Install application and install swupdates steps to run offline

The 2 steps in OSD that cause the majority of issues are Install software updates, and Install application, the latter could have been predicted by the experiences of install software updates in CM07.

I am convinced that the reason these two are responsible for so many hickups are largely related by their requirement to have management point interaction when calling these steps. All other steps in a tasksequence have collected, or can collect al their info upfront. The install application and swupdate steps are exceptions to this. If they could collect all their necessary details upfront, that would make for…

                    • RBA During Unknow OSD

With unknown computer deployments, there should be an authentication step that allows the deployment technician to authenticate to SCCM so he\she will only see the deployed task sequences to the unknown computer collection that are ONLY scoped to them instead of seeing all task sequences deployed to the unknown computer collection.

                        • Provide a framework for vendors to provide driver packages directly into SCCM

It would be nice to have a driver package catalogue, which is populated with packages built by vendors for their hardware. Vendors are best placed to release drivers for their hardware so why not leverage this knowledge and integrate it fully in SCCM?

                          • Bootimage download with HTTP instead of TFTP

Downloading the boot image with TFTP is slow and download may fail within slow or unreliable networks.
Downloading with HTTP or iSCSI will increase the speed dramatically and the stability is improved also.
With iPXE this technology is implemented and works fine.
My idea is to implement the HTTP download with SCCM.
This would be a great enhancement to performance and stability in the OS deployment.

Hi. I’m setting the status back to Noted – this was mixed up with the item “Add support for TFTP Window Size” – that has been Started and is available in the 1603 tech preview build.

                              Thanks,

Currently you can only remove and remove all from a task sequence option condition. I think it would be very helpful and time saving if you could copy/cut/paste conditionals from a right click menu.

Using Windows Update and hardware ID's it would be nice to make a driver package from the latest verified updates on Windows Update. Using this you could form a driver package, then also add any further updates using inf/folder.

To expand on this it would be nice to be able deploy updated drivers.

                                • Ability to disable/control the check for references at startup of a task sequence

A task sequence checks its referenced packages at startup and fails if not all packages are available. With an international hierarchy and some (very big) appplication packages that only need to be deployed in certain countries we don't have (don't want to) put all packages onto all distribution points whether they are required or not. We use the same task sequence for all countries with dynamic variables and some conditions. By condition it is decided which application will be installed at a certain location. The workaround we implemented today is to have one centralized DP with all packages so computers…

                                  • Apply all deployed applications step in OSD

A step during OSD that queries SCCM for the applications deployed to a machine. If any are deployed to collections the machine is a member of they are installed one at a time, performing any restarts untill the whole list is complete. This should be an integrated step rather than implemented inconsistently by third-parties in PS or IIS

                                      Provide Mac Provisioning with CM12.

Other vendors provide the ability to image and fully manage the Mac device, when will Configuration Manager provide this feature? Imaging Windows platforms is only part of a corporation desktop landscape, we also support Mac, having a single solution would make logical sense.

                                      • OSD Task Sequence option to ignore "unexpected reboots"

If you are doing BIOS updates as part of a Task Sequence you are sometimes faced with "unexpected reboots" because the BIOS update program restarts the computer if you want or not (e.g. Lenovo ThinkStation BIOS updates).
Those reboots will cause the Task Sequence to fail.
It would be very helpful for those scenarios to be able to prepare a task for such reboot events and to ignore the errors in order to continue the Task Sequence after the reboot.
Maybe a modified "Restart Computer" task which prepares a Task Sequence reboot but doesn't execute it could be an approach.

                                        • Multicast on a selective basis

I have task sequences for on-demand imaging of one machine via PXE and also for automatically imaging an entire lab of computers. Ideally, the automatic TS would acquire the image via multicast from the site DP but one-off OSD runs on a single machine would still use unicast. It would be very nice to see this option available without having to load the image twice on the DP and enable one for multicast.

One potential option here is to use the Multicast properties to require a minimum session size before starting e.g. 2. If that size is not met then the download will fallback to Unicast/HTTP. These settings are present in the ‘Enabled Scheduled Multicast’ UI. The session size option would also require a wait of minimum 1 minute
