  1. Add 2 new options for MDT, define and use Deployment toolkit

    Add
MDT Define Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Package
    Use Defined Microsoft Deployment Toolkit

So you can define then just use the defined MDT Toolkit. This would make it easier when you have multiple Use Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Package, in the TS. This way they wouldn't all have to be edited. So after you make a change/update your UDI for whatever reason usually applications upgrades.

This would same a major amount of time also ensure you don't miss one, and less time editing and testing.

Hi. This reads like something that would be addressed with the ‘Daisy chain task sequences’ https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8339997-daisy-chain-task-sequences-osd-and-non-osd

With that you can updating a single referenced/child task sequence containing the MDT Package and any ‘parent’ task sequence will get that update too.

Let me know if that matches your ask and I’ll merge your votes with that item.

  2. Possibility to priorize an (InPlace) Upgrade Task Sequence over Update Installation

Since Microsoft introduced the strategy to deliver two new OS builds per year for Windows 10 and a mandatory expiry date of SAC builds, the focus / Engineering task focuses back to perform in place Upgrades via Task Sequences.

As those Task Sequences are not deployed at a specific time during the week it might happen that some Windows OS Quality or Office Update are pending or queued for Installation. It does not make sense to deploy a Quality Update for the OS Build which is queued to be upgraded to a new OS Build (with new Quality Updates).

  3. For the option to "Run only on the specified client platform," include the option to specify specific Windows 10 branches.

Include the ability to select specific Windows 10 branches for the option "Run only on the specified client platform." I have scenarios where I would like to limit certain task sequences and/or packages to e.g. current branch 1607 but not 1703.

  4. Link groups or steps together in Task Sequence

Would be nice to have the ability to link identical groups or steps together, so that when you change one, all the linked ones also change.

This could be useful if you for example have a lot of repeating tasks in different parts of the task sequence, for example adjustments after reboots, or with different groups for software installations (where the steps are the same).

Groups\steps would probably need a "Link ID" and a visual change to reflect that the group\step is a linked group\step in the Task Sequence Editor.

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. What you’re suggesting is covered with this item – https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8339997-daisy-chain-task-sequences-osd-and-non-osd

The idea being steps that are common would be seen as modular – so with the modular steps in a ‘parent’ task sequence(s) an update to the modular would then update in all.

Please have a read of the link and let me know if that will address your ask. If so then I’ll merge the votes.

You’ll also see a comment that the Nested Task Sequence has disappeared from Tech Preview – that will be rectified shortly.

  5. Pre-Cache of task sequence content "Files Cached" notification

When deploying Operating Systems, we are using the Pre-Cache so customers can install at a more suitable time; however there is no notification in Software Centre to advise if the files required for install have been cached.

This leaves a "pot luck" install, especially for those on slower broadband links on whether the install will start instantly, or if it still has to download the content and wait an inexplicit amount of time before the install can take place.

Can the "Available" change to "Ready to install now" or similar, so customers know they wont have to wait for downloadingā€¦

  6. Task Sequence Step / Action / Option "Generate Custom Status Message

It would be really helpful to have the possibility to generate a Status Message with a custom Message ID from within a tasksequence. Maybe as a seperate step, maybe as an checkmark under the "Options" tab.

This message ID could be used to trigger a Status Filter Rule more granular to improve overall Status Filter Rule performance.

Example: A company with 20k Clients deploys Operating Systems and Software via task sequences, the result ist that there are hundreds of thousands of 11171 events. When we are able to set a Message ID 65000 in the OSD Task Aequence, we areā€¦

  7. OSD Task Sequence Restart Computer step needs "if reboot pending" option

Please add to the Restart Computer OSD task sequence step an option that will check if the system requires a reboot and then only restart the computer if it needs to. Right now to work around this need, we have to execute a PowerShell script and write the results to a custom task sequence variable and then use that variable as a condition on the Restart Computer step. Adding this option natively would be much more elegant. Attached is the script we're using.

  8. Create an OSD variable for Secure Boot - _SMSTSSecureBootState

Create an OSD variable for Secure Boot called _SMSTSSecureBootState. It should have three values depending on the state and the currently running OS: Enabled, Disabled, NA. This can be used during a TS to determine if Secure Boot should be enabled. Currently, a TS variable has to be defined and set based on if the registry key exists or not.

  9. Allow multiple lines in Run Command Line for Task Sequences

Currently we can only add one command line per task. Can that be changed to add support for multiple command lines and only return the error code on the resulting script? This would allow for much faster development and trouble-shooting in task sequences.

  10. Preflight checks support in OSD for Win10 upgrades

Provide a better way to support preflight checks for OS upgrades in terms of success/error being shown to users. Being able to show users a warning sign instead of a hard stop error would give better user experience. Currently, we either get "Installed successful" message, with having continue on error checked, or hard stop or scary error message that's presented to users if requirements aren't met. Everyone uses preflight checks now for OSD, please support it better with better notifications (customized) and error/warning handling.

Thanks for the feedback – updating status to Noted. See https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/configmgreng/2016/03/11/configmrguv/

As mentioned there’s some excellent samples provided from our MVP community. We’ll likely break this item to distinct pieces e.g. expanding Check Readiness step to test for Battery/Is Wired etc.

As well as preflight using /Compat prior to upgrade can help with finding issues before deployment. For 1806 that will now run without stopping CCMExec (setting ProvisioningMode).
Coupled with using /Compat for upgrade Windows produced SetupDiag to help diagnose upgrade blockers in more detail – see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/setupdiag

  11. Be able to Set autologon during TS for Kiosk PCs

    Hello,

It would be wonderful if we could set Autologon during task sequence since we can create really nice provisinog package from ADK and use DISM during WinPe to set assigned access to a certain account and app.

It would be awesome if we could somehow stop SCCM to remove autologon when TS is completed so we dont have to create workarounds after the TS is completed.

  12. Re-think task sequence policy download in OS

Currently deployed task sequences create a lot of policy download and slow down the initialisation of a workstation. If they worked like in bootable media, or another way - I don't know if say downloading the TS policies as a zip would help?

  14. Suppress user logon while using Task Sequences outside of OSD that require a restart

When using task sequences to deploy applications or settings that require a restart, please include a check box on the "Restart Computer" action to suppress the user logon actions (ie. Ctrl + Alt + Del).

  15. WMI Query Builder for Task Sequence Options

In the Task Sequence/Options window, I can add a condition for a particular step by adding an "if" criterion that matches a WMI query, similar to building a device collection. This way, particular steps in a task sequence would only execute if a device happened to be in the selected AD OU or another, for example.

But in the WMI Query builter for device collections includes a click-here type of builder, whereas the query window in the task sequence just has a blank text box.

While I could either write the query by hand (and hope it's correct) to seeā€¦

  16. unknown computers distribution point

make a separate Unknown Computers Collection for each Distribution Point, in that way you could make a task sequence available to computers in specific boundaries.

  17. I would like OSD standalone media that allows access to the SMP on the network. I guess this would be more of a hybrid media.

I basically want to be able to create standalone OSD media that allows me to backup/restore users files and settings to our State Migration Point. The standalone media now only allows for the hard link option when using USMT. If there was a way possible to maybe create some kind of USMT wizard in the task sequence on the standalone media that would allow me to move the users files and settings to a USB drive or SMP that would be really useful.

  18. When deploying a task sequence you should be able to deploy to multiple device collections

When you are deploying a task sequence in the Deploy Software Wizard, you should have the ability of selecting multiple device collections to deploy to (much like the 1702 feature of selecting multiple applications to add to the Install Application step in a task sequence.

  19. Problem with verifying connection in Join Domain step

I'm seeing an issue with verifying the account used for joining the domain in a task sequence. Despite choosing a domain and OU, when I click verify it is defaulting to Users > Contoso

  20. WinPE wizard upscaling or hard-coded resolution settings for HiRes displays.

It would be great to be able to customize the screen resolution in WinPE from within the boot image properties, especially on 4k devices where the native resolution makes it difficult to see task sequence steps/failures/logs in WinPE. I've read about an unattend.xml file that you can put in the WIM file but it'd be nice to have this a native feature of ConfigMgr.
