  1. DCR : Change "Pre-download content for Task Sequence" description in GUI

This is a DCR request to update the Desploy TS wizard. The option to "Pre-Download content for this task sequence" is by itself misleading. Technicians attempting to deploy a TS, select the option "Pre-Download content for this task sequence" believing all content will be downloaded. Leveraging this option with a Software TS or without an upgrade package, often results in unexpected errors.

By design this features currently only applies to the OS upgrade package and related drivers. The only place this is mentioned in the CONFIGMGR console is when the feature is enabled.
"Pre-cache content on client for available deploymentā€¦

Updating status to Noted. Thanks for the feedback.

The Pre-download content for this task sequence applies to all statically referenced packages OS Images, SWD, Driver Packages, OS Upgrade Packages. If pre-download is set and the task sequence references 1 OS Image, 20 Driver Packages then all 21 will pre-download to cache. Only the OS Upgrade package uses the pre-download logic – match for Language and Architecture.

We’ll likely add a ‘Learn more’ FWDLink to something like https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/osd/deploy-use/create-a-task-sequence-to-upgrade-an-operating-system rather than change the string. As we add more objects to use Pre-download conditions then we can keep the link updated.

  2. Add computers to collections when creating USMT association

When I create a computer association for USMT, I also put the computers into collections ("USMT Capture" and "USMT Restore" collections.) It would be great if the computers could be automatically added to a set of user-defined collections (one for source computer and one for destination computer, with the possibility that they're the same collection) when the association is created, then automatically remove the computers from the collection(s) when the association is deleted.

  3. Remove the need for elevated privileges to create task sequence media.

Currently, the console requires elevation to generate task sequence media. It'd be nice if it didn't.

Related, is there any documentation as to the whys?

  5. While creating task sequence media a lot of time is wasted when you only see afterwards (or during use) that it would fail.

There should be a check at the very beginning of creation whether or not the Variables.dat would be exceeding its limit of 32MB.

It takes a lot of time to create media, and when you only find out afterwards that the Variables.dat is much bigger in size and thus the Task Sequence would fail, a lot of time is wasted

  6. Make USMT more streamlined

I would love to see a more streamlined USMT process. Currently it's a multiple step process, which requires you to create the associations, and then target the source and destination PC's via task sequence. Ideally all you would need to do is setup the association, and the migration would then kick off without the need for a Capture and Restore task sequence.

  7. Add New Capabilities to Task Sequence Condition Copy/Paste

We would like the following capabilities added to the task sequence copy/paste conditions feature: (1) If pasting into a step that has no conditions, the right-click content menu should simply say Paste. Paste Under, Paste Before, and Paste After only make sense if the step has other conditions. (2) Add ability to copy/paste more than one condition at a time. (3) Add ability to copy-paste conditions between different task sequences.

  8. Add Software Center branding color to Task Sequence Engine Window

This would be a great consistency improvement, and would look slick! See attachments for (terrible) example mock up.

  9. Fully automate creation of new Boot Disks

When you need to create a boot disk you need to go through multiple steps. When ConfigMgr setup is run Boot Disk creation is fully automated using the installed ADK. I would love it if there were a one button option to create a boot disk in the console using whatever version of the ADK is currently installed.

  10. Add compatibility check to In-Place upgrade task sequence

Adding compatibility check task/tasks to "Upgrade an operating system from an upgrade package" task sequence with custom error message descripting the compatibility error.

    Example: check the attachment file

  11. Easy way to change Settings package in Task sequence.

Now if you want to change settings package you need to manually find every single instance of Gather, and replace settings package. Why not have it set as TS preference, and you could set it once for a TS, like you do when you use wizard to set up TS.

  12. Allow converting AD Discovered computer objects DDR to full objects

    Bare metal deployment.
I would like to pre-stage object in AD with all its required group membership/correct OU location, so when the object is discovered & pulled to SCCM, I can convert it from DDR with resourceid starting with 20something (10 digits) to normal object with resourceid starting with 16something (8 digits) so I can do OSD with installation of Applications based on collections (that are in turn AD OU/group membership based).
Now I have to create objects in both AD & SCCM at the same time and STILL the useless DDR gets created anyway, which must be later deletedā€¦

  13. Add "Referenced by Task Sequence" item to Boot Image Summary or Details tab

    The problem:
When multiple admins are working on OSD Task Sequences, it is not obvious to see if a boot image is being called by a TS without going into the Properties of every single TS. This is exacerbated by WIMs created outside of SCCM, as is the case with MDT Boot images.

    Suggestion:
Add "Referenced by Task Sequence" item to Boot Image Summary or Details tab.

  14. Access task sequence variables when using run as following account

It would be nice to have access to task sequence variables in scripts when using the 'Run as following account' option. The work around I am using is to dump the variables i require out to a txt file using the run powershell script block options(very nice BTW). From here I can then reference the variables in my scripts.

Maybe adding them to the registry for the duration of the build, and gets deleted on TS error or completion, or something like RAM, so they disappear during a reboot or outside the TS and get created again if required, couldā€¦

  15. Offline servicing : install servicing stack update first

When scheduling offline updates to OS images, make sure SCCM install the Servicing Stack Update before the Cumulative Update (or allow the users to determine which update has to be installed first).

For example, I had an issue when trying to install SSU KB4498947 and CU KB4494440. SCCM tried to apply the CU before its prerequisite SSU, resulting in the CU being absent from the image.

And the worst thing is that I cannot create another schedule for this CU as it is now missing from the list of available updates. As if SCCM permanently consider this CU as nonā€¦

  16. Please add an option to choose that a OS deployment on the target Computer will be only enabled when a capture on the source PC was done

User State Migration: Please add an option to choose that a OS deployment on the target Computer will be only enabled when a capture on the source Computer was already done and the Migrated Data is on the Migration Point. Or add a possibility to query for the state Status in a dynamic Collection Membership rule. At the moment the target Computer can start there OS Deployment task sequence, even the migration data is not at the State Migration Point.

  17. A progress bar when distributing an OS image package to a DP

A progress bar would be very helpful when distributing an OS package to a DP. It will help track the package progress and get a better how long before the package will become available.

  18. Link groups or steps together in Task Sequence

Would be nice to have the ability to link identical groups or steps together, so that when you change one, all the linked ones also change.

This could be useful if you for example have a lot of repeating tasks in different parts of the task sequence, for example adjustments after reboots, or with different groups for software installations (where the steps are the same).

Groups\steps would probably need a "Link ID" and a visual change to reflect that the group\step is a linked group\step in the Task Sequence Editor.

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. What you’re suggesting is covered with this item – https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8339997-daisy-chain-task-sequences-osd-and-non-osd

The idea being steps that are common would be seen as modular – so with the modular steps in a ‘parent’ task sequence(s) an update to the modular would then update in all.

Please have a read of the link and let me know if that will address your ask. If so then I’ll merge the votes.

You’ll also see a comment that the Nested Task Sequence has disappeared from Tech Preview – that will be rectified shortly.

  19. Enable Bitlocker: Add Option to Skip if No TPM

The 'Pre-provision BitLocker' step has an option to skip the step when the devices does not have a TPM or when the TPM is not enabled.

I'd like to see that option added to the 'Enable Bitlocker' step. Whether it's enabled by default is another question I guess. However, this is one of the many things that hang up new admins trying to get their first Task Sequence off the ground. Just spent an hour or so trying to get past this step.

  20. "retry this step if computer unexpectedly restarts"

Add the "Retry this step if computer unexpectedly restarts" option on the 'Options' tab for the Run Package, Run Command Line & Run PowerShell Script task sequence steps.

This is somewhat similar to this request: https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8482756-osd-task-sequence-option-to-ignore-unexpected-reb

    I'd prefer a per-step option versus a blanket setting.
