  1. Make the SMSTSPreferredAdvertID feature work without requiring all systems having to be targeted

It would be really useful if the SMSTSPreferredAdvertID feature would work without every CM Client (known or unknown) needing to have the policy for the hidden deployment. This is usually set using a front end menu by a technician or end user driven deployment. If there are multiple task sequence deployments that need to be available, this could result in a large amount of unnecessary policies. The other option is to have a webservice drop a system in a collection prior to kicking off the task sequence engine, however this has drawl backs and can result in a delay inā€¦

  2. Dynamic Task Sequence installation

@ #MMSMOA2016 it was annonced that nested Task sequences will come, hopefully in version 1610.

Please consider to implement this new feature in a way where it also is possible to install nested task sequences using a variable just like it is for packages and applications.

  3. Dynamically Set TimeZone During OSD From DP

Create a task sequence step which could be optionally added to dynamically set the time zone on a client during OSD based upon the time zone of the distribution point said client is retrieving content from.

  4. Expose some policy data through the SMS Provider

It would be great if there was a WMI class that we could query, or a method we could call, to verify if policy is targeted to a specific client. In complex OSD scenarios, there is no way to verify whether TS policy has been targeted to a device after modifying collection membership without accessing SQL directly. For example, a method that could be called with just the client GUID or resource ID and a specific Task Sequence policy GUID, simply returning True or False, would rock. This could be called every 30 or 60 seconds and the process couldā€¦

  5. Deployment workflow manager and wizard to help build custom answer files

Deployment Workflow wizard within WAIK Image manager to create custom answer files. Partition wizard that will help create a deployment package with system and recovery partitions in tact. Wizard to allow users to specify Legacy or UEFI deployment. Allow the ability to directly modify a WIM and add required files to the image itself. This is to deploy images without SCCM. Driver package wizard that can add model support to a standard base image, again without the use of SCCM. There are many complicated and time consuming methods to accomplish these task however some automation would allow more precise setupā€¦

  6. Add variable for controlling smsts log files

Today, sccm will retain two copies of a task sequence log at most, and then truncate them when they reach a certain length.

It's possible to customize this but you need to bake a file into your boot wim image. This capability should be moved into the task sequence as a new variable.

    Call it smstsnumberoflogs and SMSTSLOGROLLOVELENGTH.

finally, zti_copylogs should be amended to copy all smsts log files, not just the first two, as it's written today.

  7. Handle PowerShell Execution Policy during OSD

During OSD and utilizing built-in "Install Applications" action. If the application has a detection method that utilizes a PowerShell script, the installation will fail.

Having a variable to set this globally or having the default behavior with the TS environment change the execution policy would allow that scenario to work with out issue. In addition, it will allow the execution of posh scripts with having to specify the execution policy at each iteration of running powershell.exe.

  8. Move task sequence parsing into a separate log

When searching for logging about a particular step in smsts.log, you often have to skip over multiple parsing entries from reboots. Moving the logging about parsing into a different log (smstsinit.log?) would make troubleshooting a bit easier.

    Thanks for the feedback

We have a couple of open work items to improve task sequence logging and I’ll add this to the list of potential improvements to consider

  9. Information dialog for "Check Readiness"

When "Check Readiness" fail because of requirements then the result is a error dialog without any information why it fails.
So yes we can go into logs and tell why it fails but for the users that started for example Windows 10 upgrade the error message is not clear.

It would be good if it can say why it failed.
    Example:
Not enough disk space. Require drive with XXXXMB

  10. Boot Image Password protection - make "enable command prompt" in boot images more secure

Make it possible to password protect the F8 command prompt during OSD.

the F8 support is very usefull for troubleshhoting but it is alos a security issue. Having two bootmedias (one with and one without) isn't a workaround since you will have to reboot to get the F8 support and the problem may not occur during the second atempt.

Allowing us to password protect the prompt gives a secure function that doesn't require a reboot when you have to troubleshoot.

  11. Adjust ZTIApplication to return error codes during installation

Currently, if an application fails to install due to a typo or error during install, the task sequence just continues on. It would be preferable to at least have an option for the task sequence to fail if an application did not get installed.

  12. Allow MDT steps to be migrated when using the wizard

The migration wizard is not able to migrate "third-party" steps in a task sequence, including Microsoft Deployment Toolkit steps. For many of my customers this a huge blocker to have a smooth migrating experience from test to the production environment. MDT steps should not be seen as "third-party" and be migrated.

  14. UDI Wizard Applications, dynamically

Would be nice to have UDI work more like MDT. Currently, when applications are updated we need to go in and manually update all of the applications that were changed and then redeploy the toolkit files.

It's a lot more convenient in MDT. You just mark the application to show up in OSD and it pulls it in dynamically. Or build something like this into SCCM so we don't need to use UDI to allow the techs to choose what applications to install.

In MDT we were able to easily change the computer naming wizard to add options like aā€¦

  16. Add the option to run a package and Run Command line from DP

We have the possibility to select to "Access content directly from the DP" when deploying a operating System image in a Task Sequence. It would be great to be able to do this for "Run Command Lines" as well.
Example scenario, you want to run a Powershell script from a package before the disk is formatted in a scenario where we use Bitlocker for instance.

  17. Upgrade Windows 10 OS Image in console

Upgrade Windows 10 OS Image to latest version within the console (via Offline Servicing) instead of having to run build/capture Task Sequence to generate a new WIM.

    Thanks for the feedback

We looked into this to see what was possible with Offline Servicing – the ‘Upgrade roll-ups’ are executables. Offline Servicing is limited to CBS (Component Based Setup) updates – same as what can be applied via DISM – based on that build/capture remains the way to go. Using OS Upgrade then Capture works well too.

  18. Allow us the ability to view all variables and their values that are available in a task sequence (both built-in and custom) via a gui

While testing some new functionality in SCCM 1602 current branch I inadvertently searched for a possible new variable using the 'set dynamic variable' step.

Unfortunately that doesn't list read only variables in the 'existing variables' list (read only variables begin with _). It would be awesome if this gui would list all built-in variables (including read-only ones) as this would make searching for a particular variable easier than having to google or bing it.

Secondly, how about the option to list all custom defined variables in this gui, along with their values (if any). today we get the following headingsā€¦

  19. Allow Applications with interactive deployment methods in a task sequence

In SCCM 2007 we utilized package with multiple programs. One install program that was silent to be used in a task sequence. One with interaction (appdeploy toolkit e.g.) for distribution to existing PCs. Once we moved to application we created multiple deployment methods with the appropiate filters. However if one of the deployment methods does contain the 'allow interact' option the application can not be added to a task sequence even though there are deployment methods that would apply to a OSD situation were it would pick the non-interactive one. Would like to see a logic check in the taskā€¦

  20. Option to direct import images from MS VLSC

It would be convenient to have a method to enter/save your volume licensing credentials to have it directly download an iso from the volume licensing site, extract the wim into a designated storage location, and then import it directly into the console. This would especially be nice considering the more frequent release of new Windows 10 builds. I like running my B&C from the newest image available.
