Thanks for the feedback. We include CMTrace.exe in the boot images so logs can be read in WinPE, that tool is part of the SCCM Toolkit and can also be found on the site server under \OSD\Bin\\CMTrace.exe

For OS Deployment logs there’s a section here which helps – https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh427342.aspx – the main OS Deployment log is SMSTS.log

We have an open item for improving logging, copy logs etc – I’ll add your feedback to that item.

Hi. Prior to 1610 we ‘sysprepped’ the Client removing Certs, TRK etc. In 1610 we have changed to remove the client completely – see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-in-version-1610 for What’s New in 1610

See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/osd/understand/task-sequence-steps#BKMK_PrepareConfigMgrClientforCapture for detail on the changes in the task sequence Prepare ConfigMgr Client for Capture step

Where you have issues with the client not being fully removed in SCCM 2012. If so can you elaborate on what they were and also let us know if the changes for removing the client address your issues.

  3. UEFI to BIOS conversion

understand that in sccm 1609 that is a function to convert bios to uefi in OSD task sequence. will there be a function to convert uefi to bios as well?

  4. Allow Task Sequence Editor to retain the window size from the previous session.

The default window is too small to see the window pane contents properly. It always needs to be enlarged. Either make it larger as a default or allow the user to set the size and retain it across sessions.

  5. Fully automate creation of new Boot Disks

When you need to create a boot disk you need to go through multiple steps. When ConfigMgr setup is run Boot Disk creation is fully automated using the installed ADK. I would love it if there were a one button option to create a boot disk in the console using whatever version of the ADK is currently installed.

  6. Use inventory information to download drivers from Microsoft Update

This would provide an easy way to deploy drivers in OSD task sequences.

  7. Block reimage/ wipe when machine is flagged for eDiscovery

When machine (mobile or desktop) is marked for ediscovery, block a wipe or reimage. Online and offline image. This tag could be a special file on the un-encrypted partition, hard disk serial number or some other flag.

Task seq should notify user that reimage cannot be applied, console should notify if deployment is added to this machine. Same would happen if wipe is sent.

Override would require Yes/No only by eDiscovery user role.

  8. Remove apps bundled with system image

At the moment we have to remove several apps from Windows 10 with a script after installation. For example, we have to remove Mail and Skype because we deploy Outlook and Skype for business.

As currently the Windows 10 image gets updated twice per year we also have to update the script as well because the version numbers change.

I'd like to propose an option where you can edit the properties of the image and you can deselect apps (and maybe other components as well).

  9. bandwidth throttling for OSD

The "Rate Limits" tab on a DP works for transfers from the Primary to a DP. Can we make Rate Limits work while re-imaging computers on the local subnet? We have had users complain that the network is slow while doing OSD. Intelligent bandwidth throttling on the local subnet that a DP manages could help stop this.

  10. Allow disabling the option to create dynamic boot medias

Provide an option for administrators to prevent the creation of dynamic boot medias. In several single primary site Environments of my customers which also have MPs in DMZ dynamic boot medias fail sporadically, as they select a MP that they cannot reach. Telling them not to use Dynamic Media helps only temporarily, until somebody clicks Next without thinking and then ends up in complaining that the Boot Media does not work always. Alterrnatively the MP selection should be Boundary aware as introduced in CM2012 R2 SP1.

  11. Allow to select Management Point in WinPE based on boundary/boundary group

There are several scenarios where this would be really helpfull, especially in High-Security environments where clients and servers are spread accorss different Firewall Zones. WinPe will eventually query the right MP for policy but it could take a while.

  12. Update all instances of package in a task sequence

We have multiple packages that are used by multiple steps during a task sequence (scripts packages and custom software packages that take multiple steps to install). Since said package might be referenced by a half dozen or dozen steps, when a package revision is made, all references must be updates... which is easy to miss some. It would be great to update the first step referencing the package, then click a button to 'Update all References' and every other step that references the old package gets updated to the new package.

The whole purpose here is we don't update existingā€¦

    Thanks for the feedback.

We’ve started work on this item – https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/8339997-daisy-chain-task-sequences-osd-and-non-osd – this will allow ‘modular’ task sequence

I think this will solve your ask too. In your case you would update one task sequence – that task sequence would be referenced by others. One it’s updated with the new scripts package for example, then all task sequence that call that one will have the updated scripts.

    Does that address your scenario?

  13. Handle PowerShell Execution Policy during OSD

During OSD and utilizing built-in "Install Applications" action. If the application has a detection method that utilizes a PowerShell script, the installation will fail.

Having a variable to set this globally or having the default behavior with the TS environment change the execution policy would allow that scenario to work with out issue. In addition, it will allow the execution of posh scripts with having to specify the execution policy at each iteration of running powershell.exe.

  15. DCR: Restart Computer to PXE or Boot Media

Provide an option to restart computer back to PXE to allow Bios configuration changes (or simple Bios Updates) like switching from Bios to UEFI or to configure RAID Controllers inside Windows PE and Restart again to PXE to get access to the new disk configuration.

How this can be done easily:
Have a required deployment on the collection where device is member of.
Ensure Network Boot is first boot device.
As the system has already started from Network the "Clear Required PXE Deployments" must occur for this device
    Initiate WPEUTIL REBOOT

  16. PXE Limitation

In heirachy if there are multiple primary site when we try to reimage a PC where the DP is attached to primary site different from the one the PC is attached, PXE fail to start we need to delete the computer record so that it would be regonised has unknow computer post that image build goes through fine

    Thanks for the feedback

What’s happening here is the policies are not visible across different sites. So, if a client is already assigned to site A, the Management Point/Distribution Point on site B wonā€™t be able to access those policies and boot the client.

The guidance is to delete the record – same as what you’ve been using

We filed a documentation update to add the same information to https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt627940.aspx

  17. Dynamic Task Sequence installation

@ #MMSMOA2016 it was annonced that nested Task sequences will come, hopefully in version 1610.

Please consider to implement this new feature in a way where it also is possible to install nested task sequences using a variable just like it is for packages and applications.

  18. Show Task Sequence Properties as its own window on the taskbar

Many times I'm wanting to compare Task Sequences, but as I open them they fall behind other open windows (such as MDT itself). I end up having to minimize or move windows around until I can find both properties windows. The same occurs if I'm looking at a task sequence and then click into a VM, or any other time I'm working at multiple things at once.

  19. Expose some policy data through the SMS Provider

It would be great if there was a WMI class that we could query, or a method we could call, to verify if policy is targeted to a specific client. In complex OSD scenarios, there is no way to verify whether TS policy has been targeted to a device after modifying collection membership without accessing SQL directly. For example, a method that could be called with just the client GUID or resource ID and a specific Task Sequence policy GUID, simply returning True or False, would rock. This could be called every 30 or 60 seconds and the process couldā€¦

  20. Deployment workflow manager and wizard to help build custom answer files

Deployment Workflow wizard within WAIK Image manager to create custom answer files. Partition wizard that will help create a deployment package with system and recovery partitions in tact. Wizard to allow users to specify Legacy or UEFI deployment. Allow the ability to directly modify a WIM and add required files to the image itself. This is to deploy images without SCCM. Driver package wizard that can add model support to a standard base image, again without the use of SCCM. There are many complicated and time consuming methods to accomplish these task however some automation would allow more precise setupā€¦
